Kick starts more retail infographic in the year of the dragon… 7 outlet centers' market share 9.33% of #Taiwan's total large-scale shopping complexes in 2023. Gloria Outlet, near Taiwan's major intl airport and 40-min driving from Taipei & Hsinchu (TSMC HQ located), is the one over NT$ 10 billions (US$ 31.6 millions) sales. The post-Covid time, it performs double digits growth (2022: 22.62% and 2023: 18.45%) because of the wealthier catchment area and intl tourists increased. Mainland China’s shopping appeal is real. Judging by the record number of Hongkongers flocking the border, the bargains are great. During the recent Double Ninth Festival, hundreds of Hongkongers flocked to mainland China. They were drawn by the appeal of cheaper goods, diverse dining options, and more affordable services since China reopened its borders in January. A new record in visitors was set. On October 21st, 425,500 Hong Kong residents traveled to the mainland and Macau, surpassing previous records set during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays. The trends show Hainan shaping up as a luxury shopping destination with its status as a duty-free shopping and resort destination. The island recorded $5.46 billion (34.94 billion RMB) in duty-free sales in the first three quarters of this year. At the same time the rise of other duty-free zones such as in Shanghai, Guangdong, and Guangzhou, is visible. Julius Baer index finds #Taipei to be the 8th Most Expensive City in the World based on consumption for high-net-worth individuals(HNWI) The index used is based on the latest prices for a basket of 20 discretionary goods favored by high-net-worth individuals(HNWI), including luxury cars, fine dining, and high-end real estate. In 2022, Taipei was the third most expensive city in the world and the second most expensive in Asia, behind #Shanghai. I'm currently researching Taiwan's #luxury sector and was surprised by this

This is an interesting attempt by Mothership to answer the question posed, which I think applies to #malaysia as well. But here are I think the differences between malls in Malaysia and Singapore (SG): 1) Neighbourhood malls here are not quite as "generic" as SG's. We tend to find more of the non-international or homegrown retailers in our neighbourhood malls. I'd cite Bangsar Shopping Centre as the perfect example. 2) By extension neighbourhood malls that are too "generic" don't seem to work very well here. Even for malls that seem to follow a certain template such as AEON Malls, they are not all the same. Some of them are also being revamped and rejuvenated. The demonstrative indifference that tourists encounter in Shanghai is surprising also because China's economy could really use private consumption right now. This is evidenced not only by macroeconomic statistics or the collapsing China sales of Gucci reported at the end of March, but also by anecdotal evidence.   On Saturday evenings or during the Qingming holiday, Nanjing Road shopping boulevard was very busy. But beyond prime time and prime locations, streets, malls, and shops are sometimes almost deserted. In the "Super Brand Mall" in the shadow of the Shanghai Tower, e.g., artistically veiled sales areas (pictured) indicate retail calculations that do not (or no longer) add up. This was very different in all the other metropolises I visited in the Far East before.   HOUSING. Vacancies are not only found in retail but also in the housing market. From the train from Shanghai to Suzhou (yes, in the end, we got our train tickets through detours), we repeatedly detected entire groups of tall, obviously completed but vacant residential buildings.   I have only seen something like this before in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur – in 1998, when a debt-fueled real estate bubble caused the great Asian crisis.   (To be continued.) #goingeast2024 with Pascal Roski. #axelspringer  

Redundancy to the max in Taipei, Taiwan To tourists and casual observers in Taipei, Taiwan who are unaware of the population density in the city resulting in "suppressed desperation", the retailers--some of many--shown July 26, 2023 near the Zhongshan MRT station in the underground mall would seem "normal". But they wield zero advantage as businesses except being exposed to foot traffic only during rush hours. Ruefully workers going home simply are not shopping for accessories, purses, sundries as shown. Identical stores or ones offering similar goods are plentiful within a kilometer radius. The Mitsukoshi department store is literally on top of the retailers shown. These stores simply should not exist to only keep employed unskilled Taiwanese or ones unwilling to do more rigorous work in the hospitality, F&B sectors for examples, which suffer serious labor shortage. Redundancy of similar or identical businesses in many parts of Taipei, Taiwan seems to add vibrancy, buzz to the city, but actually being signs of desperation of businesses that hang on by fingernails in a saturated market. Walk through the ritzy malls in the Xinyi shopping district to see ghost-towns mostly, where the sales clerks outnumber customers by far 99-percent of the time. Such sign being unsurprising to those who know that Taiwan being a nation that was never meant to be. #RedundancyToTheMaxInTaipeiTaiwan
