As Pear Suite recognizes International Overdose Awareness Day we know addressing opioid abuse requires a comprehensive approach including education, non-clinical treatment options, and addressing social determinants of health. Community Health Workers are making an impact by collaborating with community-based organizations and working to reduce stigmas. By collaborating with CHWs and equipping them with tools, they are empowered to help provide comprehensive care and work together with communities to prevent overdoses. #IOAD2024 #TogetherWeCan #EndOverdose

This month, we hosted Stacie Brown, Overdose Prevention Program Community Engagement Lead from the Allegheny Health Department Overdose Prevention Program. Building awareness and providing education to our team members is essential to reducing stigma around #SubstanceUseDisorder in the workplace and in the communities we serve. As we close out #NationalRecoveryMonth and head into #NationalSubstanceUsePreventionMonth I reflect on the fact that most people have been impacted by substance use disorder because it continues to transcend the intersectional identities that often define us. Substance Use Disorder does not discriminate in any way, shape or form. It's your family, your friends, your co-workers, your neighbors, doctors, teachers, lawyers, elected officials - it's someone you know even if you don't know. I reflect on my personal struggles, my family history, the codependency and the trauma that substance use has on not just the individual struggling but their entire support system. I think about the work that I do and how crucial it is to create workspaces where folx can be supported in their recovery. I think about what #EquitableWorkforceDevelopment means to #Goodwill and how we can continue to remove barriers for every single person we serve. Please continue to advocate for #HarmReduction approaches, a #StigmaFreeWorkplace, and life-saving resources like #Naloxone, which can be safely used on anyone from an infant to an older person. These discussions must lead to action all year round - not just two months out of the year. To recognize Public Health Week, we are addressing public health issues that correlate with the work that we do in mental health and substance use treatment. The production of and the use of marijuana is a major concern for our communities, putting many at risk for mental and physical health complications. Often, the adolescents we see in recovery, have been affected by marijuana use, so we urge them and everyone to raise awareness of this issue and “say no to weed.” #publichealthweek #nationalpublichealthweek #planttheseedandsaynotoweed #saynotodrugs #saynotoweed #substanceuserecovery #substanceusetreatment #preventaddiction #suncloudhealth

This research is important. "The experiences and needs of millions of overdose loss survivors have been largely overlooked in the clinical and public health response to the overdose crisis". At Herren Project we know how far reaching, and how devastating these losses are. We have lived it. That is why we offer 26 weekly family support groups, including 6 grief groups, led by highly trained clinicians.
