The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has announced a new challenge which Global Cement has devised, in order to help the global cement industry work towards reducing its emissions and therefore eventually achieving net zero concrete. The challenge has been named The Innovandi Open Challenge 2024 and it is a pioneering international programme which aims to bring together tech start-ups and leading manufacturers, as they work towards a common intertest of reaching net zero. The first steps for this project to commence have been taken and currently tech start-ups all over the world are being encouraged to submit applications to be granted a place on this project. The start-ups being targeted are the ones that show a clear and active interest in the development of carbon capture use and storage for low carbon cement and concrete. The parties running this project are searching for innovative technologies and this could include process integrated and end-of-pipe Co2 capture and use. The main criteria for the technologies, is that they have to have the potential to capture carbon dioxide and prevent carbon being emitted into the atmosphere. Holcim has broken ground on its state-of-the-art GO4ZERO plant in Obourg, Belgium. The plant, which marks an investment of more than EUR500m, is expected to produce 2Mta of net-zero cement by 2029. According to Holcim, the GO4ZERO project transforms cement manufacturing at every stage of the process. Accelerating decarbonised energy use, more than 95 per cent of its energy will be sourced from alternative fuels, while over 30 per cent of its raw mix will come from partly decarbonised alternative raw materials – predominantly waste generated by other industries, thereby advancing circularity. As a result, the plant will cut CO2 emissions by 30 per cent as early as 2027, and it will also operate Europe’s largest installation of floating solar panels. Holcim is partnering with Air Liquide on the project with EUR230m in support from the Innovation Fund, which is financed by revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System. Commenting on the new plant, Miljan Gutovic, CEO Holcim Group, said, “By advancing decarbonisation as a driver of profitable growth, Holcim is on course to make net-zero cement and concrete a reality at scale this decade. GO4ZERO is one of our six large-scale, European Union-supported carbon capture, utilisation and storage projects. Cement and concrete have an important role to play in decarbonising the built environment. It is great to be mentioned in the Sifted’s article on startups decarbonising the industry. Carbonaide technology, originating from the VTT, can replace cement with CO₂ and lower the footprint of concrete from 50% to 100%. If new low-carbon binders are used, the result is carbon negative concrete, with footprint of -60kg/m³. 100kg CO₂ is mineralized per m³ of concrete and permanently stored. Our industrial pilot (TRL9) has been operational since August 2023 and 20 - 30% savings in cement has been achieved. In addition, variety of alternative low-carbon binders have been now tested on an industrial scale, paving the way to carbon negativity. Two new initiatives, demonstrating strong market commitment for decarbonisation, were launched at COP28: ✅ The Breakthrough Initiative, launched by UAE and Canada, will enable collaboration between countries, businesses and other organizations, to accelerate investments in the technologies, tools and policies needed to help the cement and concrete industries to achieve net zero by 2050. ✅ GCCA – Global Cement and Concrete Association launched Innovandi Entrepreneur Network bringing together start-ups developing decarbonisation technology and leading industry players in pursuit of net zero goal.
