Dear Grambling State University, we have a rich football legacy to honor, protect, and uphold. If we, as a body, didn't come to the playing field to WIN, then, we don't need to play AT ALL. Hiring is about hiring someone who can lead, is qualified, and has a proven record of winning championships. Hiring is not about comfortability or about the best fit in the way(s) one sees it. This also includes the players as well. SHUT-UP! LISTEN! FOCUS! RUN PLAYS! WIN! PerioT. Players, this is college football; not the NFL. However, if you wish to be looked at by NFL scouts, then run the plays that CREAT VICTORIES. MAKE REPEATED CHAMPIONSHIPS. WIN! Hopefully, I've ruffled feathers and busted some egotistical bubbles.

What do these 2 have in common other than a degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill? We both sold t-shirts to help cover college expenses. Michael Berard went coastal with his “King of Beaches” parody tees. I focused on a niche market, selling anti-dook t-shirts.   Due to a Budweiser trademark challenge, Mike ended up battling the corporate giant, Anheuser Busch, in court in 1991, and winning (!!) after which a higher court reversed the decision due to consumer confusion. But later, in true David v. Goliath story form, the court of appeals OVERTURNED the judge and found for Mike. Anheuser Busch appealed to the US Supreme Court but they let the decision stand.   I deservedly got busted by Collegiate Licensing Corporation because of the “Top 10 Reasons not to go to The University of New Jersey at Durham (Duke)” tees I sold. The shirts were confiscated. I wish I’d saved the cease-and-desist order.   I am not sure about Mike, but I learned a few lessons.   1)     Fortune usually favors the bold.   2)     “Hustling” has positive connotations.   3)     Creating a business enterprise in college, I gained sales and sales management, design and marketing, inventory control, finance and “how to escape campus police” acumen.   4)     The “University of the Streets” t-shirt selling experience at UNC helped me find my career path, and I am still at it 38 years later.   What did you learn in college?

The state of Texas is the most talent rich recruiting region. In the late 2000s, Mack Brown built a Great Wall of Texas, but Texas A&M’s entry into the SEC cracked the door for out of state schools. Now there are three SEC programs - Texas, A&M and Oklahoma - who primarily recruit the state of Texas. It’s Not Where You Start 🏈 Meet Matt Ganyard, the University of Virginia’s 34-year-old kicker. [Disclaimer: As a misfiring 33-year-old, my knees hurt just writing this. 🤣] Ganyard first graduated from UVA in 2011, having never played a down of college football. Like ever. Not even flag football intramurals. 🚩 Ganyard did tryout for the football team twice in undergrad, however, but was turned away both times. “I still have the email from 2009, saying I didn’t make the team,” Ganyard said. After graduating, he turned his attention to the Marine Corps, following in his father’s footsteps. ⏩ Fast forward to present-day, after a decade in the military, Matt is now back on campus as a graduate student pursuing his MBA. With only one year of eligibility remaining, Matt decided to give it another try… And was named UVA’s starter on kickoffs coming out of fall camp this year. 👟🏈 ***************** 🔑 Key Takeaways You’re not too old. Partioned Local Depth: College Performance of NFL QBs Drafted 2010-2021 Analyzing data on EPA, total points added, and total QBR from QB's college careers, a distance matrix can be created that represents how close or far individuals are from each other based on the above metrics. A PaLD graph can be made from the matrix that visualizes the strength of the relationships between individuals. Kyler Murray is the most isolated, suggesting that his college career, based on the metrics used was the most unique of those years. Cam Newton, Johnny Manziel, Deshaun Watson, and Joe Burrow all have strong ties due to their similar physical traits and statistical rankings. PaLD shows Marcus Mariota and Mitch Trubisky have strong statistical ties which is quite understandable considering the commonalities in their play style at Oregon and Carolina. A strong tie from the collegiate level does not result in similar relationships in the pros (clearly). While most players on the left tail of the graph were all drafted very high (most No.1 overall), Anthony Gordon went undrafted in 2020 and has yet to get a shot in the NFL. While an outlier in a sense, players on the left most end of the big cluster, such as Mason Rudolph and Sam Bradford also had underwhelming careers. Being in the middle of that pack is not a "bad" indication either. Dak Prescott and Russell Wilson had close relationships with each other, but not with the players on the left tail. No one would argue that Wilson and Prescott have superior careers than Manziel or Trubisky. So much goes into being a successful QB and PaLD shows that college statistics are only a very small piece to the puzzle when it comes to evaluating college QBs.
