I asked for just a bit of his time, and Steve Katz, the world's first CISO and a pioneer in cyber security, gave me 90 invaluable minutes over a video call. This was my first encounter with a man whose legacy stretches far beyond his professional accolades. Steve's career, marked by his groundbreaking role as the first CISO in history at Citicorp/Citigroup and his founding of FS-ISAC, was illustrious. Yet, his impact as a mentor to many of us was profoundly felt. I still recall the vivid stories he shared (A lesson from the world's first CISO: https://lnkd.in/gn5f_XX5); from a little merlion on his desk, a memento from Singapore over 19 years ago, to his cherished memories in Australia. His jovial nature and passion for the cyber security industry was evident for all to see - the fact that Steve volunteered to hang out with my Cyber Risk Meetup community virtually... 🤯 - "Why do we need to sell trust?" - "What is an essential safety net a CISO should build?" - "What are the critical aspects of cyber risks we need to educate our boards on?" These were just some of the topics he expanded on, which reasonated deeply with many (full webinar: https://lnkd.in/gsTUZ_Tn). I will always cherish with deep gratitude how Steve was so encouraging to me in my writing journey, contributing stories and lessons for our cyber leaders when I was working on my first Cyber Risk Leaders Book, and then my second, 'Cyber Mayday and the Day After,' with Dan Lohrmann. It was unimaginable, that Steve would offered such support to someone he barely knew, almost 16,000km away, purely driven by his belief in passing on knowledge and uplifting others. Steve Katz's legacy is immeasurable – he was more than a cyber security pioneer; he was a leader, a mentor, and the grandfather of all cyber leaders.
