In June of 1976, just four months after opening The People's Music School, Dr. Rita Simó wrote this letter to the community: Dear Friends, Many things are happening, the practice rooms are finished. The inside walls are covered with sound proof material and there is a rug on the floor so the sound is well controlled. A family from Des Plaines donated to me a French Horn, some music and a music stand. A woman from River Forest sent us a big package of beginners piano books, another woman from Oak Park gave me a big new rug, and a friend from Boston sent a package with many good records. To them all as well as to all of you, we want to say thank you for your support. As the enclosed flyer shows, we are having a flute and piano recital on Sunday June 13. If you are near by please come, we will be glad to see you. This week on #MorningMika, I have a very special treat for you: My husband, Joe Scarborough, the host of Morning Joe, is a musician, but you may not know his background. Joe grew up in church communities in the Deep South. His mother had a master’s in music and worked as a music director and organist at churches while Joe was growing up. She taught him piano in between his church choir practices and Bible studies. He always loved writing rock songs, but it was gospel music from both white and Black churches that came most naturally to him as a writer. He’s private about his music, but when I heard a song he recorded this summer called "No Guarantees," I encouraged him to record and share the song about the importance of standing up and doing what’s needed to save democracy. Inspired by a Richard Cohen Washington Post column from 20 years ago that described the peaceful life of Jews at a German summer camp the year before the Holocaust began, Joe wrote "No Guarantees" as both a warning and a song of hope. I wanted you to hear it. This week's 'Start Where You Are' Challenge: Listen to music from 3 different cultures. Continuing the recognition of Celebrate Diversity Month, take some time this week to listen to music from 3 cultures that are different from your own. This challenge comes from memories I have from childhood listening to the music of Brazilian singer Gal Costa. Growing up in a very musical household, my mom was introduced to her album Baby Gal when my siblings and I were young and she used to play it for us. Although the lyrics are all Portuguese, we absolutely loved it. Some of the songs are on our playlists to this day. I just remember the emotions I sensed in the songs, regardless of the language I did not understand, and how it made me feel something without needing to comprehend the words. There is something powerful about music that transcends culture, distance, and difference. Take some time to listen to music from different cultures this week and see what comes up for you. Consider doing this challenge with a friend or two and sharing the new music you find. It’s a great way to explore our connection with all of humanity.
