Our Illinois #summerinterns recently took time to bond outside of the office and cheer on the Chicago Cubs with our annual outing to Wrigley Field! Our #PepperFamily recognizes the importance of fostering connections beyond the job site, and this event is a beloved tradition for realizing that commitment.

As we're in the full summer mode, I've been reflecting on how my decade sleepaway summer camp (GUCI Strong!) taught me one of the most critical leadership values: connection. Though I haven't been at camp since the late 1990s, my long-time camp friends are still some of my closest friends. My best memories are still camp memories. And my most closely held values are still camp values. That's because camp creates the conditions for belonging and connection. Here's how: 🏕️ At summer camp, we lived in cabins with a dozen or so other boys. We had to learn to live together and create a cabin culture. Each cabin was a community within the broader communities of the camp units, defined by age groups, and the camp as a whole. ⚔️Small acts of kindness. Serving other campers, whether it's refilling the watch pitcher or switching out that empty toilet roll, bonded us through responsibility and concern. 🏀. Shared activities build teams. At camp, you eat, sing and dance with your team. Whatever you do together, strengthens trust and belonging. 👥 The best counselors and unit leaders created that feeling of belonging and connection – which is why I wanted to return to camp so many summers in a row, why I ran up my parents’ phone bills (in olden days, long-distance calls cost money) calling my friends all over the Midwest and Ontario, and why I cried harder than I’ve ever cried in my life when camp ended that first summer. 🤝 Belonging. Connection. Two currencies of culture that the best leaders learn how to invest for incredible returns. Want more insights on how camp values align with leadership. We often learn life's most valuable lessons when we least expect it—like during a 'hike' with a group of spirited third graders I recently started volunteering as an assistant den leader for my son's Cub Scout group! 🌲👦🏻 We set out for a "hike" last night —and I use that term loosely—at a nearby park, equipped with a map, a destination, and six energetic third graders + one little brother. There were many lessons to be learned during the evening that felt more like controlled chaos with this crazy crew. Starting the hike, we highlighted the importance of the buddy system, staying on the trail, and respecting nature. Despite a washed-out path and an unexpected climb up a steep embankment, we managed to navigate back to the trail, find the "hidden lake" (okay, it was more of a dried-up pond), and return to our cars with only a few scrapes and lots of laughter. I was reflecting on the evening and here are a few lessons I hope the scouts took away but also offer some leadership lessons for us: - Expect the Unexpected: Just like in business, even well-planned projects can veer off course. Adaptability and quick thinking are crucial for leaders to navigate through unforeseen challenges. - Empowerment through Responsibility: Assigning each scout a buddy mirrored how trust and responsibility can empower team members, enhancing their confidence and independence. - Leading by Example: Showing respect for the environment and staying calm under pressure teaches young scouts (and professionals) the importance of leading by example. - Celebrate Small Victories: Reaching the dried-up lake was our modest victory, but it reminded everyone that celebrating small wins along the way can boost morale and motivate teams. The fun was in the journey and not the destination, that’s where the people around you matter most. So far it has been a lot of fun watching these kids grow and learn, but it doesn’t stop there — it's a constant reminder of the foundational leadership skills that apply just as much in the boardroom as they do on the hiking trail. I’m just starting out on this fun journey volunteering with our Den but I couldn’t be more excited. Cheers to more adventures and lessons along the way! #Leadership #Scouting #CubScouts #LifeLessons
