We hosted a new edition of Nixon Peabody LLP's Hot Topic series, this time focusing on the food and beverage industry. We heard some great insights from a panel of private equity, M&A, and food & beverage industry leaders (Joe Faro, Matthew Finnerty, Helana Robbins Huddleston CPA, CIRA, MBA, Rhonda Kallman, Robert Schmidt, Alberto Sinesi) about their market outlook and the trends driving growth and opportunity. Here’s my video summary of the event. What M&A trends are you observing in the food and beverage sector?

👀 Check out this contrast… So interesting to see Leon and McDonald’s side-by-side at service stations. 🎉 Leon are really leading with whole food plants as the default image on ordering screens. 🌈 They’ve put big effort in to making the dish colourful and enticing. I’ll post the McDonald’s screens in the comments but they’ve definitely chosen different leads. 🚗 Queues always longer at McDonald’s in my experience and when you’re driving home late McDonald’s is often open when Leon is closed or winding down. 🧑🧑🧒🧒 Maybe a good measure of wholefood plant success is when the queues and opening hours have flipped. Or when there are more Leon-like options on the McDonald’s menu. 💴 Obviously there’s the issue of price. Service station prices are different but the black bean box in Leon is £4.99 at other sites. You can get more items from McDonald’s for the money BUT I think that’s an excellent price comparison with McDonald’s for feeling equivalently full. Leon vs McDonalds: which is the "better" food business? 🙌 Leon: "better" food = more nutritious, healthier, lighter footprint, higher production values 🥙 McD's: "better" business = more scalable, more profitable. 🤑 Feels a bit like David & Goliath? 🥊 And why is it so often quality vs quantity? 😭 But McDonalds was once a radical start-up innovator too.
