Farmers are committed to sustainable milk production and the Greener Cattle Initiative (GCI) is bringing them options to help mitigate enteric methane emitted by cows by investing in research to secure the future of the industry. “I cannot overstate how important efforts such as GCI are in a time when global demand for food products, such as milk and meat, is expected to increase by more than 60% in the coming decades,” says Dr. Juan Tricarico, Senior Vice President for Environmental Research for the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy. The FAO´s annual flagship report State of Food and Agriculture 2023 focuses on the true cost of food to transform agrifood systems. It argues that all costs (and benefits) need to be accounted for to make a business case for #agricultural #transformation. True cost accounting for GHG emissions and on the other hand carbon sequestration would reveal that the value to society of agrifood systems is likely well beyond what is measured in gross domestic product (GDP). A new transparency program by FoodChain ID and ReSeed.farm will offer the food/agriculture industry a new carbon credit standard with stronger accountability. Balancing Profitability and Sustainability For Farmers Farmers worldwide are speaking out and protesting as they face challenges such as decreasing incomes, strict environmental regulations, rising bureaucracy, and import competition. Many farmers feel trapped between the public’s demand for low-priced food and the need to adopt environmentally friendly processes, while the increase in input costs greatly affects their profits. Securing affordable access to healthy, nutritious, and safe food for the world’s growing population in the face of climate change and the widespread depletion of resources is a significant global challenge. Furthermore, food demand is expected to rise rapidly until 2050. Europe’s recent wave of protests could be an early warning sign of what’s to come if appropriate measures and policies are not taken to address this global issue.
