Corporations are gaining increasing influence at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), at the expense of states, small scale food producers, Indigenous Peoples and civil society. But far from resisting this corporate capture, the FAO appears to be actively embracing it.  The corporate takeover of UN institutions like the FAO threatens the democratic governance of our food systems. As the 2024-2029 mandate kicks off, we at EAPF reaffirm our commitment to collaborating with the new European Commission, particularly on the promised "Vision for Agriculture and Food." This vision, to be published within the President’s first 100 days, will focus on long-term competitiveness and sustainability. Aligned with the President's political guidelines, we emphasize the importance of investments and innovations across the food value chain. Addressing imbalances and protecting against unfair practices are key to building a competitive and resilient agricultural system. We already outlined our inputs earlier in the year when we contributed with the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture, advocating for a holistic food system approach that recognizes the integral role of farmers, consumers and value chain stakeholders. #G7Italy summit committed governments to a new G7 Apulia Food Systems Initiative which aims to "overcome barriers to #foodsecurity, build resilient agriculture and #foodsystems, and realize the right to adequate food by leveraging multi-stakeholder partnerships and establishing synergies with other international initiatives." The path forward for this Imitative will be determined at the G7 ministerial meetings on commerce on July 17 and agriculture on September 26-28, 2024.

That’s the main question European agriculture ministers are discussing in Genk today. 1/1 The European Agriculture Ministers work together on increasing Europe's open strategic food autonomy. In times of uncertainty and geopolitical strife in particular, European independence from external sources is becoming increasingly important. This meeting focuses on proteins. Today, mainly vegetable proteins are imported, for both human and animal consumption. Dedication to a European offer for production and consumption will have an impact on the environment and climate in Europe, as well as in other parts of the world. How did Africa became a net importer of food when it was once a net exporter? This was a question asked by Dr Ibrahim Mayaki, the African Union's Special Envoy for Food Systems and Chair of the Zero Hunger Coalition, during his presentation at the launch event for two new reports by the the Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (#VACS). For Dr Mayaki, VACS is a significant step towards achieving food security and crop diversity in Africa and aligns well with initiatives underway by the African Union. He highlighted three key issues that need to be addressed to combat food insecurity on the continent: 1. Improve soil health for long term agricultural sustainability. According to an FAO and African Union Development Agency-NEPAD study, up to 65% of productive land is degraded. Sustainable land management practices that integrates soil management are needed as well as training to empower farmers. 2. Enhance seed quality and diversity. This includes, for example, seed testing and the adoption of climate resilient seeds. For Dr Mayaki, this is critical to food security, improving livelihoods and ensuring nutritious diets. Important work is currently being undertaken by the #AfricanOrphanCropConsortium. 3. Invest in climate resilient practices and sustainable agriculture. However, this will require the adoption of a holistic approach.
