The virtual event titled “When pesticide drift happens to you,” was hosted by Practical Farmers of Iowa and featured two of PAN’s staff. Pesticide Labeling: Is Your Company Regulatory-Ready? The USEPA recently started to add endangered and threatened species protections to pesticide labeling as part of the Endangered Species Protection Program (ESPP). This will apply to new pesticide products and those undergoing registration renewal. As of February 2024, most of the 276 affected product labels are for agricultural herbicides and insecticides, but that list will surely grow. During the registration process, EPA will determine whether use of a particular product may impact listed species or their designated critical habitat. Pesticide products that EPA determines “may affect” a listed species or its designated critical habitat could be subject to the ESPP. Going forward, pesticide labels may direct applicators to obtain a product-specific Endangered Species Bulletin from an online system called Bulletins Live! Two. Bulletins will identify use limits for the product and area of application. Users will have a 6-month window to obtain the bulletin before applying a pesticide. Consider the following regarding your regulatory readiness and pesticide labels: ·        Do you maintain a defined list of pesticides approved for use in your business? ·        Who on your team provides that approval, and how do you ensure compliance? ·        Who is tasked with monitoring changes pertaining to labeling and compliance? ·        Do applicators read and understand the label for products they use? (Label compliance ultimately lies with the applicator) Addressing these questions will aid in the effective management of risk, control costs, and improve the focus of training, among other benefits. A sad day when the Biden administration EPA sides with China Chem a Chinese state owned pesticide company. And re -approves a highly toxic herbicide which is already banned in 60 countries including inside China as well as the UK and EU. I guess Biden policy favors China more than American's health. Can something please explain to me what I am missing here ? : By re-approving the “highly lethal” substance, the EPA has “violated the law” and put industry interests before public health, the plaintiffs allege. “There is an incredibly overwhelming body of evidence on this that has been accepted by scientists across the globe, and the EPA’s decision really placed it at odds with the best available science,” said Jonathan Kalmuss-Katz, a senior attorney with Earthjustice, the suit’s lead plaintiff. The EPA’s decision is the latest salvo in a decades-long battle over the use of paraquat, which is a highly effective weed killer. Elsewhere, Syngenta, which produces the substance, has lost – nearly 60 countries have banned paraquat. A state-owned Chinese company bought Syngenta in 2017, but China still prohibits the product, as do the UK and EU. About 8m pounds annually are sprayed on US grapes, almonds, soya beans, cotton and other crops, most commonly in California’s Central Valley, Iowa and the Mississippi River Valley. The substance’s use tripled in the US between 2008 and 2018. The Pesticide Risk Tool is designed to help you make informed decisions about pesticide use and integrated pest management (IPM). IPM is an approach that combines multiple tactics, such as biological control, cultural practices, and pest monitoring, to reduce pest damage and pesticide use. The Pesticide Risk Tool can help you select the most effective and least risky pesticides, as well as identify the best timing, rate, and method of application. The tool can also help you evaluate the trade-offs and synergies between different IPM strategies and their impacts on pests, crops, and the environment. It covers over 300 pesticides and 200 crops in the United States, but it can be expanded and customized to include other regions, crops, and pesticides. Here's why: 🌿 In 2017, when the EU voted to relicense glyphosate for 5 more years, Italy stood firm in opposition. 🚫 Since then, Italy has consistently voted against glyphosate relicensing at the EU level. 🌱 We're pushing for an exit strategy, championing alternative, safer weed control methods. The new U.S. Farm Bill will provide protections for pesticide manufacturers at the detriment of America's health. The U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Committee passed its version of the Farm Bill in late May. Section 10204 of the farm bill would give immunity to pesticide producers from liability lawsuits associated with any harm or adverse health effects caused by exposure to their products. Section 10205 would block state and local governments from passing laws about pesticides or requiring more disclosures on pesticide labels. Over 40 states currently restrict pesticide use near schools because of the significant health risk. The EWG found that 4,028 elementary schools are within 200 feet of a crop field where pesticides can be sprayed. The new farm bill would prevent any jurisdictions from passing any measures to protect the health and safety of schoolchildren. According to the 2024 lobbying disclosures, House committee head Glenn Thompson received $10,000 from the National Confectioners Assn, American Crystal Sugar, Minnesota Corn Growers Assn, and Syngenta Corp. Syngenta is one of the four largest agrochemical herbicide, insecticide, and fungicide manufacturers and is owned by ChemChina. The Senate Agriculture Committee released their framework for the new Farm Bill but have yet to vote on it. Arkansas Sen. John Boozman, the committee head, also received $20,000 from Syngenta.
