Let's start by discussing your remarkable career. You mentioned that you're not only a captain with South African Airways but also a military reservist. Could you share with us how your journey in aviation began and your role as a military reservist? Captain Vundla: Thank you for having me. My journey in aviation started in 1999 when I joined the military. I served in the military as part of the permanent force until 2010. During that time, I gained valuable experience in flying. It was a great foundation for what was to come. In 2010, I transitioned to the airline industry and have been with South African Airways for the past 13 years. Joshua: That's quite a diverse and extensive career. What motivated you to make the transition from the military to the airline industry, and how has your military experience influenced your approach to aviation? Captain Vundla: The transition from the military to the airline industry was motivated by a desire for a new challenge and the opportunity to explore different aspects of aviation. My military experience brought discipline, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic to my career as an airline pilot. It has also been beneficial in terms of leadership and teamwork, which are essential in aviation. Joshua: That's certainly impressive. Over the course of your 24 years in aviation, you must have encountered various challenges and successes. Can you share some memorable moments from your career that stand out to you? Captain Vundla: One of the most memorable moments in my career was the privilege of flying heads of state during my time in the military. It was a profound experience to be entrusted with such responsibilities. In my airline career, every successful flight and every safe landing are memorable moments. The satisfaction of knowing you've safely transported people to their destinations is a feeling like no other. Joshua: Those must have been incredible experiences. Before we conclude, Captain Vundla, is there any advice you'd like to share with aspiring pilots or individuals looking to make career changes like you did? Captain Vundla: Absolutely. I'd like to say that people will always have an opinion of you, but what truly matters is what God has lined up for your path. Your past doesn't define your future. Work hard, remain dedicated, and always be open-minded to learn and adapt. The aviation industry is constantly evolving, and a humble attitude towards learning is crucial. Leaving the Comfort Zone: Embracing Growth and Opportunity. Reflecting on my journey, I'm reminded of the invaluable advice my father, an esteemed Indian Navy veteran, has always imparted: "If there is a place where you grow, it's anywhere outside your comfort zone." With over a decade of experience serving onboard ships, I reached a point where the routine became comfortable, the pay was good, and the tasks were well-practised. However, I realised that true growth lies beyond the familiar and the routine. That's why I made the bold decision to transition to a shore job, despite the scepticism from colleagues who believed I should attain the Master rank first. Driven by a desire to chart my own path, I embarked on this new journey prepared and determined. Transitioning into the role of Crewing Manager was not without its challenges. I faced the uncertainties of corporate life and worked tirelessly to adapt to my new responsibilities. Yet, it was this willingness to step outside my comfort zone that ultimately led me to where I am today. Now, as I find myself once again in a place of comfort, I am preparing to take on yet another role, one that promises even greater challenges and opportunities for growth. Through this journey, I've learned that true growth comes with a price – the willingness to embrace discomfort and uncertainty. Comfort may be where dreams go to die, but it's also where they can be reignited and realised. I am committed to pushing boundaries, chasing dreams, and achieving new heights – full throttle. A career pilot offers practical tips for airline new hires.

The aviation industry changes quickly. Hiring trends from 2023 are not translating into the hiring trends of 2024. In an industry that is susceptible to quick changes in market forces, career pathway programs can offer reliability and stability to a pilots future career that standard hiring practices can't. United Airlines's #Aviate program is just one example of the many professional development and career guidance programs that can benefit future professional aviators at multiple points in their career. Every pathway program has a set of benefits and restrictions that can direct the long-term development of a pilot's career. When researching career pathway programs, don't be afraid to ask questions. These programs offer amazing opportunity, but each one is different. Make sure you understand the requirements and find the best professional pathway for you.

As we finish up week two of our three week course, 3 of our current cohort have already received notice that their application has advanced to the next stage (Medicals and security clearance)!🎉 To be there when they got their ‘golden calls’ and to see their faces, reminds me why I do what I do. I was part of their journey to making their dreams come true!💗 💬“But what’s the point? You don’t need the course to be cabin crew” This is true.
