Courage to lead Interns are like not-cut Diamonds; They have flaws, some of them are totally worthless, but once you cut them well, they become something great one day, and that’s what EY has been doing, CUTTING US INTO DIAMONDS I have learned an incredible amount of valuable information during my time at EY. I knew I had passion for IFRS, but I didn’t know what that meant for my career path. I knew I wanted to be part of a collaborative team that is focused on helping each other to be best version of themselves. Reflecting, I couldn’t imagine calling anywhere else “home”. Courage to lead is resistance to fear; mastery of fear “not absence” of fear. It often requires “more courage” to dare to do right than to fear to do a wrong. Over the past year EY has shaped me as a person, l have learned that whenever one’s mind is made up, this dimishes fear, knowing what must be done does away with fear thus “making decision based on the right thing to do”. EY has taught me not to be afraid to challenge the pros, even in their own backyard, without courage we cannot practice any other EY values . Thus it take courage to grow up and become who you really are. (I am EY) in my case Getting direct mentorship from the CMP Mr Mkwananzi, equipped me with the delicate mix of soft skills in addition to technical knowledge. This experience has without doubt, made the greatest impact on my education since the profession has aspects that can only be learned in the field and consequently I’m truly grateful for this. “Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it’s stupid. "After my internship here, I accepted a position in another firm but immediately felt out of place. So when PwC offered me a role, it was a clear choice. The steep learning curve helped me grow my confidence and pulled me out of my shell. Coaching and on-the-job training, coupled with enriching experiences of working with my team and clients, became integral components of my growth. I joined PwC with a degree in accountancy from UiTM and no professional qualification. And I decided to challenge myself by choosing to pursue ICAEW while working in audit. Being in audit and balancing the roles of a wife, mother, and daughter back then, was challenging but doable with the support of my family and the people I worked with. When I finally passed all my papers, I was ecstatic! Beyond the sponsorship by the firm, the unwavering support I received from the different people I worked with was invaluable. This memory – 10 years ago – remains deeply etched as one of my happiest and proudest accomplishments during my earlier years at the firm, which really transformed me as a person. My 14-year journey in PwC has been a full circle experience for me, and I’m proud to remain a consistent force in the firm. I could wonder how different things would have been if I had made other choices, but I know deep down I wouldn't have changed a thing. What anchors me here is the sense of connection with the team, the environment, and my development. Now, I take pride in imparting the same transformational force onto my team's growth. At this point in my career, witnessing those I trained progress upwards, chasing behind me as a manager, is fulfilling. People may say, "You can't possibly stick around that long in a Big 4 firm," and I understand the skepticism. Whether they've left to excel elsewhere or grown within the firm, I'm equally proud to be part of their journeys. Staying in the firm is a personal commitment. Today, as I stand among the dynamic EY management team, I can't help but marvel at the incredible transformation and growth that these four years have brought. 🙏 Gratitude overflowing: The memory of my first day is etched in my mind – the excitement, the nerves, and the overwhelming gratitude for the opportunity to join such a prestigious firm.
