This is what I see. I know that I have the program I just need the Government, Courts, Prisons and Police on board.

This scene, from my second film "THE PRISM" on the crushing BURDEN of SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS (SEN) and MENTAL HEALTH, is also, a response to the Straits Times article on 26th July 2024 on the disturbing social trend of HIKKOMORI- WHEN THE SAFETY OF SOLITUDE BECOMES A PRISON" by Chong Siow Ann.

The tragedy of this phenomenon is that it does not happen to the younger demographic alone. It happens to those who, after having tried to develop relational trust and meaning, got 'burned' too many times and this led to them not wanting to get 'burned' again because undergoing the same cycle of pain is far too great to bear anymore.
In this day and age, where there is some awareness now of the term 'mental health', it is better than previously when there was not even much consciousness and stigmatisation was far greater.
But, even though many are familiar with the term 'mental health', many do not know the manifestations nor aftermath of not handling such issues well.
Two integral aspects are needed for good mental health for all parties
*a) Relational Trust*
*b) Open, honest and yet respectful communication*
As we, in our limited knowledge and since we cannot read the minds of others, can only form impressions based on temporal observations and reinforcement of the 'herd mentality', we will not know the history and trauma of each individual and that is why it is important to establish that channel of direct communication first where the middle ground can be achieved to mutual benefit.
For some, they could be at that stage of life where it could be the last bastion of hope that there can be some form of relational meaning and purpose because of past cycles of trauma.
But when we do not exercise empathy, nor communicate there and then, nor give a chance for that vital step of redemptive restoration, and when things reach a head because that integral step is circumvented, by then, it is very difficult to salvage anything.
We may think we have won the argument, but we end up losing the person, and sometimes, the consequences can be be life changing in a devastating manner. It is better to err on the side of giving the benefit of the doubt and try to understand others first because the long term benefits of that is mutual trust and willingness to work through challenges together.
The inverse quick fire alternative approach which may seem to produce immediate results can, ironically, end up destroying hope for the future and perhaps, even on life itself.

Here's my (very) personal perspective on why programmes such as the Treatment and Recovery Programme, that currently runs in Mountjoy Prison, are so important in terms of rehabilitation / addiction awareness and the development of real-life change.

Our thoughts, doubts, and fears can create invisible walls in our minds, limiting us. It's like having a mental jail where self-doubt serves as the guard, and overthinking becomes the bars. Escaping often involves breaking free from negative thinking patterns.

When we talk about trauma within prisons we have to consider everyone. Prisoners may not arrive traumatised but after a very short time they will more than likely suffer from complex trauma due to the fear on a daily basis off being in an environment like a war zone, causing that internal alarm to go off constantly. Being on hightened awareness at all times will take its toll, mentally and physically. This has to also be said about prison officers, who are working with some of the most traumatised people in society and to support prisoners better they need to be taken proper care off. A better system of self care without fear of stigma, a better system of supervision for officers on a regular basis, better access to speaking about those experiences that occur. Better training packages for officers around trauma and how to deal with someone who is traumatised. Things are moving forward albeit slowly but how many more officers will suffer before things change. How many more prisoners will filter through a system that is broken before things change. Prison is a scary place for everyone, showing more compassion to everyone is a way forward.

Prison officers have higher rates of PTSD, suicidal thoughts, suicidal plans and suicide attempts than the general population. These are stats we really can't ignore.

A culture of impunity is like a substance addiction; relapsing is unavoidable. We see a cycle of behavior in #Ethiopia in which efforts are made to hold officials accountable but ultimately undermined or ignored. Impunity ultimately prevails with most efforts at accountability. To get away with it, a shift toward a culture of accountability, instead of sporadic efforts that result in impunity, is necessary.

There are several issues and challenges that local police face, and some of the biggest problems include: Police brutality,excessive use of force,humiliation in the society and yelling which creates PTSD. One of the most significant problems with local police is the issue of police brutality and excessive use of force.
