In the blazing inferno of cybercrime, humanity stands at a crossroads, engulfed by a trillion-dollar conflagration each and every month. However, let's not mistake the culprits. It's not solely the cybercriminals who have honed their craft to a razor's edge. The real tragedy lies in the complacency and denial of cyber defenders who cling to their futile comfort of ignorance. In this digital dystopia, the flames lick ever higher as the majority turn a blind eye to the uncomfortable truths glaring them in the face. Instead of facing errors and oversights head-on, many simply bury their heads in the sand, hoping the fire won't consume them. Rome is burning, and the stench of apathy hangs heavy in the air. It's time for a clear reckoning—a call to arms for openness and honesty in the face of adversity. We must confront mistakes, acknowledge self inflicted exposure and subsequent vulnerabilities, and stand united against the onslaught of cyber threats. For things to change, WE MUST CHANGE... For every instance and plethora of psychological distancing and denial, cybercriminals are handed another victory, another opportunity to ravage our digital existence, economies, and society's. Let us cease being the bystanders in the downfall of civilization. Let us be the architects of our own salvation, forging a future where truth reigns supreme and lies are cast aside like ashes in the wind. In the shadow of history's poignant milestone, we stand 60 years to the day since the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This pivotal moment not only marked the loss of a charismatic and beloved leader but also unveiled the specter of corruption, challenging the very foundations of trust in American and global governance. As we commemorate this anniversary, the echoes of JFK's legacy extend into the digital age, where the continuous erosion of trust takes on new dimensions. The journey through the corridors of history and the interconnected realms of the digital world enable us to explore how the lessons that should guide our pursuit of a digital future built on transparency and resilience. However, like the long cast shadows of previous Government corruption digital manipulation transcends us into an Internet littered with weapons and traps being the relics and tools cast aside and exploited by our agencies and that have led to cyber crime. Great article Bill. Emphasised our recent discussions about the Board really understanding their risks. I like the comparison between finance and security. Although a Board doesn't need to understand Finance as they have very visible financial metrics. They have a high level of assurance that finance is protecting the companies financial risk. With Cybersecurity the Board is generally less assured. They may have a CTO/CIO that's informing them. They may even have a dedicated CISO, sadly often one rung down reporting to a Board Exec. However there are often inadequate or wrongly focussed KPIs that (non deliberately) mislead the Board into a false sense of assurance. The key word in my opinion is 'defend'. Defence is where I generally see all activity and money being spent as the focus is on 'defend against attack' where it should be 'defend against business interruption' Very different concepts but the Board need to know they are paying for, and being advised on the later.
