Question from the #trucking Rumor Mill: Has Hirschbach ended their CDL Training school and program for aspiring #truckdrivers? Am i late to the party? Did everyone know about this except for me? Just heard a driver report that one less training opportunity is available for new drivers. A recruiter informed them that the CDL Training School was no longer being offered. Which is always unfortunate. One of the main areas that the #truckingindustry could stand to invest more time/money/resources in is in training and education of new drivers. Job placement and networking, safety training, understanding the local economy and opportunities, and on down the list: good truck driving schools and driver development programs are vital to growth and sustainability in the industry. This'd be the type of thing i'd reach out to people like Dave Dein and see what their advice is on folks that may be looking for other opportunities to get into a solid training program, or revisit groups like the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma that have developed their own programs over the years. Hopefully this rumor isn't true, the industry could always use more quality options elsewhere for folks to jump into.

As my master’s degree in Technical Writing is completed this week, my internship collaborated with American Adventure Park Systems (AAPS), the leading zipline builder in the U.S. My journey with this family-owned business began at a 2019 challenge course expo. AAPS stood above all others with its impressive 30-foot-long by 20-foot-tall curved big screen, which displayed the video you can see in this presentation. With about 500 zipline companies within the US, AAPS has 107 ziplines in one location. However, as I began to know the team, I explored their training processes, and it became clear that there was room for improvement. I was also concerned about a call with a zipline insurance broker (Robert Monahan, Hibbs Hallmark) that caught my attention. He said, "The problem with the rising zipline injury rates was training,” rather than zipline braking related, as I had witnessed. His statement struck me. I knew poor training leads to critical oversights, like neglecting to reset a zipline brake for a patron. I also knew that most ziplines' arrival speeds exceeded 6 MPH, which requires an emergency brake (E-brake) that resets itself. (Compression springs at the bottom of ziplines will lower accident rates.) Zipline owners create a huge risk to patrons and staff if they don’t monitor the arrival speeds for max-weight zipliners daily. So, reflecting on my research and scholarly insights, I saw the opportunities for training that could significantly reduce zipline braking risks. Then, I began advocating for self-resetting zipline emergency brakes and better communication. Woodcock's scholarship (2014) emphasized the importance of communication between operators, which could prevent slips and enhance safety, particularly in multi-operator ride scenarios. Motivated by this realization, I proactively collaborated with my client, developing seven deliverables to enhance safety and promote best practices in zipline operations.

Quality engineering is of course about engineering. That is obvious. But its also about people. Without the human element being right all we have is a bunch of machines with no one to run them. There are 4 key areas to think about which make the difference and this was something else I talked about in my session at Red Bull F1.
