Last month during the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA)'s Pet Food Conference, Frank Mitloehner of the UC Davis CLEAR Center took the stage to unearth the industry's true environmental impact. As consumers' concerns for #sustainability rise, many in the #petfoodindustry have turned toward eco-friendly packaging, alternative proteins and sustainable operations to reduce their impact on the environment. Though these efforts are great, Mitloehner stressed the need for the industry to support more interventions at the agricultural level. One of my strategic thought partners works at a pet food company. Why? Pet food often follows human food trends. We share supply chains. And most importantly, agricultural practices spread across the globe from farmer to farmer. While the skeptics sometimes flinch at the "big names" getting into #regenerativeag, these types of collaborations move the industry forward and done right, support farmer livelihood. https://lnkd.in/gMHV8fKF

Europe gives a nod to cultivated meat! 🚀 | The UK has approved the world's first cultivated meat for pets — a major win for Meatly and a gamechanger for the global pet food landscape 🐶 Research suggests that the pet food industry has a massive climate impact, comparable to entire countries like the Philippines! Although this initial approval caters to our furry friends, this milestone could pave the way for wider regulation and acceptance of cultivated meat for human consumption across Europe. 👀 As the European continent begins to embrace cultivated meat, the ripple effects will be felt worldwide, inspiring countries to explore sustainable protein alternatives and paving the way for a more resilient food system. 👉🏽 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gZCUBgpC #petfood #cultivatedmeat #futureoffood Good Food Institute Europe

Big news for sustainable pet owners! 🌱 Hungarian insect producer Agroloop is taking a giant leap towards eco-friendly pet food. Their new €20 million facility, set to open near Budapest Airport in autumn 2024, will harness the power of black soldier fly larvae to create a protein-rich alternative to traditional animal feed. Why this matters: - Water Wise 💧 Uses 40x less water than traditional livestock farming. - Land Steward 🌍 Requires 30x less land per unit weight of protein. - Energy Efficient ⚡ Produces feed with reduced energy consumption. - Climate Champion 🌿 Generates 40x fewer carbon emissions per unit weight. Plus, their circular economy model upcycles over 20,000 tonnes of food byproducts annually, transforming waste into a valuable nutrient source for insect production. Have you considered insect-based pet food for your furry friend? (this is not a paid endorsement - I just have a very strong interest in insect foodstuffs) #InsectProtein #EcoFriendlyPets #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/eCk2JrCP

The UK has become a pioneer in the lab-grown meat industry by granting the first-ever regulatory approval for its sale - but not for human consumption. This innovative product uses cultured chicken cells grown in a lab setting to feed pets. This approval represents a significant step towards more sustainable and potentially ethical pet food options. Lab-grown meat avoids the substantial environmental impact associated with traditional meat production and has the potential to eliminate the need for raising animals specifically for pet food. Check out the full story on the BBC website. Another major media outlet looking at the matter. Tackling #sustainability can feel like a Herculean task, especially for #petfood processors just getting started on this journey. But starting small and individualizing your approach based on your specific company needs and values is a great place to start. “Sometimes getting started can mean surveying what your company is already doing and building on it,” said Lara Moody, executive director at the Institute for Feed Education and Research. 🐶Pet food brands can support ethical agriculture through sustainable sourcing practices by prioritizing traceability and transparency in their supply chains. They should ensure responsible farming practices and verify the absence of harmful substances. 🌿Supporting organic and regenerative farming methods can minimize environmental pollution and promote soil health. Collaborating with fair trade organizations ensures farmers receive fair wages and work under safe conditions. Pet food brands can also minimize food waste by utilizing by-products and surplus ingredients from the human food industry. Investing in research and development enables exploration of alternative protein sources and sustainable packaging solutions. By embracing these practices, pet food brands can meet consumer expectations while positively impacting the environment and animal welfare. 💪 Let's work together towards a more sustainable and ethical world for our pets' meals. #Sustainability #EthicalAgriculture #SustainableSourcing #PetFoodIndustry #AnimalWelfare #EnvironmentalImpact #petfood #Peptido

The U.K. poised to lead the alt protein market? Despite regulatory push-back in Italy and France, the U.K. government has approved cultivated chicken cells for sale in pet food. Meatly will be the first company to take this technology to market here. Interestingly, the article states "a study by the University of Winchester found that 50 per cent of surveyed pet owners would feed their pets cultivated meat and 32 per cent would eat it themselves." Would you feed this to your dog? Would you eat it yourself? My view is this sets a precedent for future approvals and shifts us closer to these technologies being accessible as a tool for more sustainable food systems. Next up, approval for human consumption?

BSF in the news: "Insect protein is a key solution to a sustainable pet food industry" "On June 12, the White House introduced a plan to meet its goal of reducing food loss and waste in the U.S. by 50% by 2030. The National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics, a collaborative effort between USDA, FDA and EPA, included multiple mentions of insects as part of the solution to this problem, noted Aaron Hobbs, executive director of the North American Coalition for Insect Agriculture (NACIA). “Just this week, the Biden Administration published its plan," said Hobbs. “Insects can -- and are -- playing a growing role in the prevention of food waste and food loss in multiple ways.” Full story: https://lnkd.in/d2UGaBh3 #insects #petfood #insectfarming #insectos #insectes #moscasoldadonegro #insecten #insectfarm #petfoodinnovation #petfoodindustry #blacksoldierfly #petfoodingredients #sustainability #alternativeproteins #pets

Curious about how the pet food and aquaculture industries performed in 2023? According to Alltech’s Agri-Food Outlook for 2024, global feed production held steady with a slight decrease of 0.2% to 1.29 billion metric tons due to various factors. In terms of pet food production, the industry experienced a slowdown in growth, reaching 34.7 million metric tons in 2023. North America led the way with 11.3 million metric tons, while Latin America saw a 3.85% increase in ingredient usage for pet food. Asia Pacific also experienced growth, attributed to the rise in pet-owning households. However, Europe was the only region to see a decline in pet food production, totaling 10.9 million tons in 2023. Supply-chain disruptions and inflationary pressures were key factors contributing to this downturn.
