HOW TO OVERCOME RESISTANCE WHEN CREATING SAFE(R) SPACES? This was among the many questions we have discussed yesterday at our panel on the Pride Business Forum annual conference in Prague. Representing Deutsche Telekom I got to share the stage with brilliant Javier Leonor-Vicente from Accenture, Zdravko Krstanov, editor-in-chief of Forbes online in Czech Republic, and the audience of the #fullybooked conference, a record breaking #360+ crowd of #inclusionenthusiasts. We have addressed some of the perspectives of #CEEregion workplaces when it comes to fostering safe(r) spaces for #ubnderserved social groups and #LGBTQIA+ employees in particular. Here are the key takeaways: 🙌 Organisational maturity is key to sustaining safe(r) spaces - being deliberate in #unlearning #powerdynamics, being mindful of #biases, being #open and #embracing new perspectives all adds up to measurable business advantage. 🕹 Scan your #peopleprocesses for #fullinclusion - the most resource heavy, crucial background work, that needs to be #crossfunctional and #systemic while allowing almost no space for PR purposes. However without this one the #glassceiling is there to stay. 🔑 There is no real change without C-suit on board - the real challenge comes when defining what #onboard #leadership means? Is it ERG sponsorship? Inclusive leadership and decisionmaking practices? Granting #resources for systemic work? - I'd say all of the above, and I'd love to read you thoughts about some more. 💊 "ERGs are where the miracles happen" - as one of the winners of the LGBTQ+Friendly Empolyer Award 2024 has so wisely put it. Start empowering your ERGs and work with them closely. These people are giving their #extratime to make #yourcompany a safe(r) space for all. 🎯 Maintain a 'safe bubble' in hostile social environments - many of us find ourselves navigating along #unjust and #opressive social systems while maintaining a workplace that protects #basichumanrights. Doing what is best and knowing when to #gopublic and when not to may be a tough nut to crack - but it is also a great reminder: FREEDOM MUST NEVER BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED. Whether you're a leader or an individual contributor, building an inclusive workplace is everybody’s duty. Work cultures are built from the inside out, and that’s why your contributions matter! You might wonder, how? Which actionable items are relevant? Well, for example: ➡️ If a new position opens up, encourage recruitment from diverse talent pools or review job poster text for inclusive language, even if you are not a hiring manager. 🌈 ➡️ As a senior team member, support junior talent by providing networking opportunities and ensure clear and equitable access to promotion paths. ➡️ Initiate a side project to create employee resource groups for women of colour, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and other marginalized groups, offering networking and support.
