Today is World Lymphoedema Awareness Day 2024. Oncology interventions necessary to improve overall survival, extend disease free survival and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence, can come with some side effects. One of those is the risk of developing lymphoedema. In the head and neck population the majority of clients (up to 84%) following radiotherapy will experience lymphoedema within the first 6-months - this can impact the ability to eat and swallow. In the breast cancer population, radiotherapy increases the risk of breast and arm lymphoedema. Gynaecological cancers that require external beam radiotherapy have an increased risk of leg lymphoedema. Untreated and unmanaged lymphoedema creates functional limitations and makes clients vulnerable to infection. Early intervention with a trained lymphoedema therapist is key to reducing these risks, especially following cancer treatments. #lymphedema #lymphoedemaawareness #cancerrehab

SYMPTOMS Requires a medical diagnosis Many patients with slow-growing types of leukaemia don't have symptoms. Rapidly growing types of leukaemia may cause symptoms that include fatigue, weight loss, frequent infections and easy bleeding or bruising. TREATMENTS Treatment depends on severity Treatment is highly variable. For slow-growing leukaemias, treatment may include monitoring. For aggressive leukaemias, treatment includes chemotherapy that's sometimes followed by radiation and stem-cell transplant.
