On June 19, 1865, news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston, Texas, setting free more than 250,000 enslaved people. Each year we celebrate #Juneteenth as a powerful reminder of the long – still ongoing – journey towards #equality and freedom in the United States. Phathom’s offices will be closed this Friday to allow our team to reflect on and recognize the profound significance of this day. Together, we will continue to strive for equity and inclusion in all that we do. #DEI #Diversity

Helping wicked smart leaders elevate their leadership results while reducing stress and embracing their own unique strengths to gain meaningful success.
Juneteenth marks the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received news of their freedom. It's a day of celebration, but also a stark reminder of the long road to equality. Freedom for some did not mean freedom for all. The legacy of slavery continues to shape our nation, and the fight for true justice continues today. We must acknowledge the past, its pain, and its resilience. We must use this day to reflect on the ongoing struggle for racial equity. How can we be better allies? How can we dismantle the systems that perpetuate inequality? Let Juneteenth be a day of resolve. Let's recommit ourselves to building a more just and equitable future for all. #Juneteenth #BlackLivesMatter #Equality ✊

I completely agree with this statement. Taking a stand against injustice, unfairness, or threats to safety is crucial, and it's essential to model this behavior for the next generation. When speaking up, we demonstrate to our children the importance of advocacy and the power of their voice. Even if the impact of speaking out isn't immediately visible, it plants the seeds for change and reinforces the values of integrity and courage. When we confront these issues, we are not only addressing the immediate problem but also contributing to a culture where silence in the face of wrongdoing is not tolerated. This can lead to broader societal changes over time, as more individuals feel empowered to take action. Teaching children to recognize and challenge inequities helps them develop a strong moral compass and prepares them to be proactive, compassionate adults. Our actions today can inspire future generations to continue the fight for a just and safe world, fostering a legacy of positive change and resilience.

The United States is purportedly a land of diversity and opportunity, but that culture has tragically been losing the cultural war of late. That said…frankly the fact that a business (like a wedding cake/website builder) can discriminate against the LGBTQIA+ community (which TBH I was less appalled by because the reality is that all successful businesses have target audiences/the riches are in the niches) but schools can’t have affirmative action and now they’re going after VC funds…I have no doubt that this horrible and purely politically motivated puppet Supreme Court will have no problem doing whatever the heck conservatives want them to, regardless of how it flies in the face of legal precedent (their own or others). I’m curious though for our legal experts: if a Dutch entity were to similarly invest in African American #entrepreneurs, would it be vulnerable to the same type of legal challenge? Or an entity based in another country? (Like could these VC funds set up an entity/account in the Cayman Islands and avoid this type of BS?) #teamgtfo #blackvc #venturecapital #discrimination #startups
If this isn’t on your radar yet, it should be. The same man who successfully challenged affirmative action is now targeting DEI efforts in the venture capital space. Totally appalling. As many of you know, I’m working on a book about the systemic issues in venture capital that lead it to dramatically underfund women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ community. This is a disappointing step in the wrong direction, and not at all the policy that is actually needed around these problems. If you want to weigh in on this subject or know someone who I should be talking to, please message me or tag them in the comments. (Thanks Shawnette R. for raising this to me.)
