On Friday, May 10, PEF’s Philadelphia Postsecondary Success Program (PPSP) Fellows convened for the Annual Spring Institute at La Salle University Library. The focus of the professional development was, “Learning to Take Notes and Taking Notes to Learn”, with the aim of helping students become active and strategic learners in the postsecondary classroom. The PPSP Fellows is a team of high school and college educators interested in bridging the gaps between the secondary and postsecondary classrooms. The annual Spring Institute is a professional development event informed by the work the Fellows engaged in throughout the school year. IYT's lead mentors and program managers are setting their sights on changing the odds around A-G completion for young men of color. Across the state, A-G rates remain low with Black, Latino, and Pacific Islander rates hovering around 35%. We know these numbers are not reflective of these young men's brilliance and capabilities. For the last ten years, IYT has significantly increased A-G rates for young men of color to 58% now (over 20% difference). We know our model works and is moving the needle but we continue to review and improve our approach every year. During a recent college advising workshop, over two dozen of IYT's mentors and program managers spent time reading through and analyzing senior and junior transcripts. Our number one challenge this year is ensuring that all of our high school members meet California's A-G eligibility requirements. Completing your A-G requirements makes you eligible for CSU and UC schools and while students can still attend California's Community Colleges without completing A-G, not having these set of courses completed can delay or prolong student's time at 2 and 4-year institutions. During this workshop, we crafted a game plan for each of our 220 seniors to become A-G eligible. This is the bread and butter of the mission! Share your experience with A-G below and let us know if you or your child is aware of these requirements. #iyt #collegeaccess #CollegeBound

Looking forward to speaking at the upcoming Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia Leading Learning and Caring conference in a few weeks. Here is the synopsis of my talk and a quick video to give some context - https://lnkd.in/eJ4J5jfp - Traditional report cards have long been the standard measure of a student's academic performance, distilling complex learning experiences into a set of letter grades or numerical values. While these metrics do offer insights into specific academic skills, they fall short of capturing the multifaceted nature of a student's abilities, passions, and personal growth. At St. Andrew's Anglican College, we recognise that traditional assessments can overlook key aspects of a student's development—such as resilience, teamwork, curiosity, and character—which are crucial for shaping a well-rounded individual. In response, the St Andrew’s Institute of Learning (SAIL) has undertaken a transformative journey to research, pilot, and implement the Personal Capacity Transcript (PCT) for all secondary students. We will delve into the research, mechanics, and philosophical underpinnings of the PCT, a dynamic learner profile curated by students and endorsed by teachers. It will highlight how the PCT provides a comprehensive view of a student’s abilities and achievements, capturing an array of evidenced skills and talents that are endorsed online and accompanied by a coaching conversation with a member of staff. The result is a live document visualising current progress that can be viewed, shared or printed off at any time. #personalcapacity #learnerprofile

Partnering with academic leaders to move faculty and programs forward ► Systems Designer | Capacity Builder | Culture Shaper
More people are getting college degrees (yay). Many few are studying education (uh-oh). Q: What's a thoughtful school to do about the pipeline of educators? A: There's a lot that can be done! One thing is to build robust recruitment, onboarding, mentorship, and professional learning programs for folks who want to be in your school--whether or not they have an education degree. The closing line of NAIS Trend Lines summary says it all: "Given that qualified and motivated teachers are the most important school-based determinant of quality education, independent school leaders would be wise to continue to invest in their teachers." I'm proud that Trey Education is partnering with schools and associations doing just that! Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gy-kP3KC

John Dewey taught that great teaching is a combination of art and science. The science can be bolstered through efficient processes and systems. These processes and systems are essential for maximizing productivity, minimizing waste, and ensuring consistent quality in school operations. The Entrepreneurial Operating System advocates for the creation of simple, scalable systems that enable smooth communication, efficient workflow, and effective resource allocation. By implementing standardized procedures for tasks such as curriculum development, student assessment, and staff training, schools can streamline operations, reduce administrative burden, and create more time and resources for teaching and learning. The art of teaching fills this time. Together, the art and science of teaching ensure the highest level of student achievement. #eos #nais

It was enlightening to learn from Mr. Jacob Martin (Deputy Head of College) and Mr. Dan Brown (Director of Professional Learning and Development) of Dulwich College (Singapore) about their approach to running a top international school. Their key principles are: 1. **Purpose-Driven Learning**: - Effective learning is linked to real-world applications, giving it a clear purpose. 2. **Adaptive and Applied Learning**: - Lessons build upon previous ones, creating a coherent flow. - Students actively make connections between knowledge, concepts, and skills. 3. **Personalized Learning**: - Students are appropriately challenged based on their individual starting points. 4. **Relational Learning**: - Emphasis on effective collaboration and positive, safe relationships. - Students engage in meaningful interactions. 5. **Structured Professional Development**: - Sustained over time and involves coaching and mentoring. - Fosters continuous improvement for teachers. 6. **Collaborative Teaching Environment**: - No ranking structure; all teachers work collaboratively. - Focus is on doing their best for students, not meeting targets. The absence of set targets for teachers is noteworthy, showcasing confidence in their pedagogy and processes. By putting students first, the school nurtures a culture of excellence without the need for external accountability measures. Teachers are intrinsically motivated to give their best for the students under their guidance. At the end of April, U.S. News and World Report released their annual list of Best High Schools. Eight San Antonio ISD schools received Best High Schools badges, meaning they are ranked among the top 40% in the nation for their scores in six indicators of school quality: college readiness; breadth of curriculum; scores on state proficiency tests; performance in reading, math, and science; underserved student performance; and graduation rates. Those schools include: Advanced Learning Academy, CAST Tech High School, Fox Tech High School, Jefferson High School, St. Philip's Early College High School, Travis Early College High School, Young Men's Leadership Academy and Young Women's Leadership Academy. It was an extra special recognition for St. Philip's, which is back on the badge list for the first time since 2015, posting gains in AP exam scores, science and reading proficiency. "Because St. Philip's Early College High School focuses on dual credit, we do not offer AP courses," principal Ashlyn Barrientes said. "Our teachers work very hard to spiral in AP concepts and content to help students meet passing for AP exams. This means that our teachers must be master planners to create strategic lessons that cover all content and skills required. Our teachers use tutoring to host interventions for students that want to challenge the AP exams. Our scholars are amazing. They rise to the levels of expectation applied by their teachers." #saisd #saisdproud #saisdfamilia #besthighschools #education #recognition #students #excellence #USNEWS #worldreport
