So the care sector is traumatised and burnt out... but what do we do about it? In my conversation with Larry Shallenberger, he describes with unusual vulnerability and openness, how their organisation, strategically built on Trauma-Informed Care, weathered the pandemic and ensuing events to find that they were indeed burnt out and organisationally traumatised. He tells the story of how they are making sense of this and the roadmap they have developed to recovery and healing. In many cases, a helicopter can get the injured patient to the trauma centre faster. However, an Ornge response may be cancelled once the patient has been assessed at the scene. As a result, the helicopter returns to base and may be reassigned to another transport It might surprise you to know that of these cancelled calls, as many as one in four of the patients were later transported to a trauma centre. The helicopter gets called back, relaunching all over again, resulting in a patient transport delay. At Ornge, we are working to improve timely access to trauma care for injured patients. Part of this involves reducing delays related to cancelled calls because timely access to trauma centres saves lives. #KeepUsComing and don't cancel the helicopter if you're leaving the scene.
