Co-presented by our Archivist, Dr David Bartle, who shares some facts about the history of the Hall itself, it also features interviews with the Clerk, Director of Schools and Director of Charities, who discuss the work of the Company today - this is not one to miss. With 19 schools across England and Wales, in addition to supporting eight parishes and a whole host of small charities, today The Haberdashers' Company is a major player in philanthropy and education in the UK.

DECUMULATION IDEAS #57: VISIT #MONTICELLO - HOME OF ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST BRILLIANT (AND COMPLEX) CITIZENS AT LEAST ONCE IN YOUR LIFETIME. Visited #ThomasJefferson's home yesterday (probably my 5th or 6th visit). For those not aware, he wrote the declaration of independence (July 4 is Independence Day), wrote the law arguing for basically the separation of church and state (which sadly folks in OK and LA seem to have not read), and founded University of Virginia (Sachin Muralidhar). "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." But not so for women and African-Americans at that time - which is a strange exception given how eclectic he was, and clearly his relationship with Sally Hemings in a head-scratcher. Visiting his house, one can see how imaginative and creative he was (would have been labeled ADHD today); donated his books to the Library of Congress etc. In these weird times in this country, helps to go back and visit the home of a Founding Father to see if we can channel their wisdom and create a more perfect union. PS: Happens to be the anniversary of one of the most popular jazz singles from another brilliant American. And maybe we all need to Take 5 in this election year. https://lnkd.in/g7v6AFbB PPS: Why do we have to sully such amazing historical sites with the names of "donors" like David Rubinstein, Robert Smith on various buildings etc? While their egos may need massaging, do the historical societies not have the backbone to tell them to buzz off if they want their names on the buildings? Same with academia - why name buildings after donors and not the best academic the school has produced? What is wrong with us?
