What's the supreme boss level in game dev? A question comes up a lot from my students ↳ especially those aspiring to be solo devs. Solo dev is tough; prepare to be: • Developer • Level Designer • Content Writer • Game Designer • UX / UI Designer • Release Engineer • Audio Engineer • 2D/3D Artist • Tech Artist • Animator • Tester And the list goes on and on and on... I'm not here to crush any dreams, but… solo ambitions may not always be realistic. Sure, there are exceptions. 🍀 In truth, creating complex games solo requires exceptional talent and ample time. So, what's the "boss level" for aspiring devs? It's forming a #TEAM OF LIKE-MINDED. As simple and as challenging as it sounds. I believe there are S+ ideas, great ideas that are so difficult to develop. When I shared this, Sergei Vasiuk asked me a great question: "What's your top tip for turning those S+ ideas into reality?" #1 #gamedev top tip: Reduce scope and build iteratively. If it truly is an S+ tier idea, then you're probably honing in on a whole new genre of games. If that's the case, you're going to need to do 10x the discovery (and validation) that other game dev projects do during prototyping. Reducing scope challenges you to trim away all the excess of your idea and keep it stupid simple. Also, whether it is a solo or team project, a small scope makes it easier to 'discover' what the game needs even mid-development. Building iteratively lets you ask key questions about your game and form answers to them. This is how you navigate the process of discovery and evolution in (indie) game design. In conclusion, treat your great idea like a chef treats their sauce. Reduce it until the consistency is thick and the flavor is enhanced.
