We are excited to share that Colorado Farm & Food Alliance , in collaboration with Switchback Restoration, has been awarded the highly competitive U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) SOLVE IT Prize! Their team, Just Transition Rural Innovations, will address methane leaks from abandoned mines in Colorado's North Fork Valley. 🏆 We're proud to support their application! The SOLVE It prize supports community-based projects that address energy challenges, while providing other economic, health, and workforce benefits. This project aims to: -Destroy waste methane to directly benefit the climate -Utilize the heat produced from methane destruction for ceramics manufacturing -Improve wildlife habitats on-site with manufactured water used during the project -Develop a greenhouse using produced heat, water, and CO2 from the project to test for feasibility in food production As the only team from Colorado advancing to phase 2, we're excited to see this innovative spirit captured on a national stage. When it comes to community impact, there's no better example in our project portfolio than the Starfire Renewable Power Project. Our project straddles three counties in Eastern Kentucky— all in need of revitalization. Energy infrastructure can uniquely contribute to revitalization by bringing affordable electricity and new jobs to the region. At BrightNight, we want to take things a step further by providing resources that help our broader project communities. But before kicking off any community support initiative, we asked Starfire’s stakeholders: - How can the Starfire Project help this former mining community rebuild and thrive?  - How can we support the area’s clean energy transformation? - Can our infrastructure efforts support recovery from recent natural disasters? The impact of our investment depends entirely on how well we listen to the community, adapt our plans, and act in partnership with local organizations. "The Rights-of-Way, Leasing, and Operations for Renewable Energy Rule generally revises BLM’s regulations to facilitate more solar and wind development on public lands. To promote renewable developments, the rule makes three primary changes: 1. Reduces the rent and capacity fees for #solar and #wind by 80% compared to the 2016 fees and maintains the reduction through 2035. It also maintains a 20% reduction for 2038 “and beyond.” 2. Adjusts the rate-setting methodology for calculating the rent and capacity fee to reflect the acres of land actually authorized for use and the energy actually produced. This methodology is available to new and existing right-of way holders. It will also require right-of-way holders to pay the greater of either the rent or the capacity fee. 3. Gives BLM more discretion in issuing leases by allowing BLM to grant a lease even where there is insufficient competitive interest to warrant a competitive bidding process. After receiving favorable screening results, Green Street Power Partners is positioned to submit a plan proposing a 200 megawatt PV plant that is expected to produce over 500 million kilowatt-hours of low-cost solar energy per year. The implementation of the proposed #solar plant provides opportunities for a variety of long term purchase agreements, as 100% of the system output will be sold and distributed to private and public stakeholders throughout the area.
