Following an historic election win for Labour, the UK’s new finance minister, Rachel Reeves, is offering warm words to private capital as it looks to rally investment for national growth. On Monday, Reeves outlined plans to set up a new fund to spur private #investment in growth sectors and unlock new sources of institutional capital. Investors are cautiously optimistic over the £15.6 billion ($20 billion) investment plans, but details on taxes remain elusive. What’s all the carry on with carried interest? Private equity has an important role to play in the UK economy so why are Labour being so vocal about the taxation of so called ‘carry’ and what could it mean for the sector? As part of our General Election points of view series I share some commentary on a topic that I’m getting a lot of questions about. What are your thoughts? Did Rachel Reeves’ comment on distinguishing treatment where fund managers put their own capital at risk seem reasonable? Or do you still think this will be a massive blow for private equity and maybe the economy? #taxloophole #carriedinterest #generalelection #tax #privateequity
