The Compassion Collective is far from your typical startup nonprofit. We are a co-created community organization fueled by a collective mission that is dynamically evolving. As its founder, I merely set the stage with a vision—a vision that envisions the community itself actively shaping our collective future. Though it might seem straightforward, the concept involves deep complexity, demanding an embrace of diversity and nuance to make this vision a tangible reality. However, I am not the architect working in isolation; the realization of this vision is the achievement of our remarkable core team and all our members, whose diverse skill sets and unyielding passion are the true driving forces behind our progress. We are currently self-sustaining as we finalize our co-created bylaws and the innovative system design that defines our community. Our approach to consent-based governance is a steadfast commitment, not a fleeting idealism, and holarchical generative system design is not just a theory but a practical reality we are bringing to life. In today’s regenerative leadership meeting, two of our core team members brilliantly showcased their ability to transform my synpractic concepts into a practical handbook for all future members. Additionally, the collective mind-mapping abilities of these autists are truly remarkable These acts exemplify how the culture of the Compassion Collective is not only formed by its people but continually rejuvenated by them—as new members and fresh ideas perennially come to the table. Our table is designed to be exceptionally inclusive, embracing asynchrony to allow for diverse forms of participation. To those who doubted the feasibility of our vision, The Compassion Collective stands as proof of concept. It's exhilarating to anticipate more members joining us on this journey, witnessing firsthand how community healing and organizational growth can be mutually reinforcing. Last night we had the privilege of hosting another wonderful evening at our Wavey HQ ✅ We had over 100+ tech leaders, across Engineering, Product & Design engaging in 3 different workshops and networking (peacefully I might add 😂......thanks to the pizza and drinks I'd imagine). In all seriousness, hosting these events is simply incredible. 100+ industry leaders in our home! This is the power of networking and having tech communities that we can be part of and contribute to. We all go through so many challenges, quite often similar ones and the best way to learn is through experience. Sharing experiences doesn't cost anything other than time, so how much time are you willing to invest to improve yourself and your teams? We’re thrilled to announce that Jake Porway, cofounder of DataKind, has joined the Board.Dev team to build out the Nonprofit Technical Governance Congress (NTGC), launching February 6 in San Francisco. We can’t imagine a better set of leaders to be at the helm of this transformational work for the social sector. This group of CTOs and CIOs from the nonprofit, for-profit, and philanthropic spheres will set direction and raise awareness for tech governance concepts and initiatives across the nonprofit world, in key areas like tech planning, tech resourcing, tech strategy, and privacy and security. The standards will be published and used to train new tech leaders serving on nonprofit boards, equipping them with the content and frameworks they need to increase tech capacity in the nonprofit sector. Two days at #SIS24 were filled with old friends and new learnings. Walmart kicked off the event, reminding us that "#philanthropy is not a side project, and Chicago Blackhawks spoke of the importance of moving away from #confettiphilanthropy towards more strategic intentional giving. I joined a conversation on #techforgood that focused on how AI was not a #silverbullet solution but a tool for addressing the challenges we already know exist. It was thought-provoking to me to consider how AI could be leveraged in building the #partnerships that everyone always says should be happening in the #nonprofit sector, but no one talks about why those partnerships should exist. AI offers an opportunity to pool #data and identify service gaps which would create real benefits for nonprofit partners as well as give insights to help #crosssectorpartnerships be more impactful. Additionally, Crisis Text Line spoke about the idea of supercharging #volunteers to be more knowledgeable and confident in their #service. AI is being talked about everywhere right now, sometimes as just the thing to talk about, but these conversations were valuable and moved the discussion forward. I ended the first day with a dinner of #changemakers hosted by Jake Wood, where I reconnected with some old colleagues, Debra Michaels and Carmen Perez, and met some new people! Day Two reminded us that the myth of #pullingupbyourbootstraps is fantastical, given the barriers to #economicmobility. Chelsea Clinton spoke on the horror that 30 million #USCitizens live in states that don't have access to maternal health care and the idea that it is more dangerous to give #birth today than 50 years ago. My daughter is growing up in a world where her grandmother had more rights and medical support than she does. The day ended with Governor Pritzker sharing his vision for a thriving Illinois. I reconnected with dozens of former colleagues and old friends, so I won't tag them all (!) but it was revitalizing to be around #socialimpact leaders working for change. Reflecting on our recent experience GPNP: Greater Pittsburgh Nonprofit Partnership Bi-Annual Summit that painted a vivid picture of an industry on the brink of transformation, driven by a commitment to innovation and a deep sense of responsibility. Here are some of our key takeaways: 1️⃣ Tech Transformation: The nonprofit landscape is undergoing a remarkable shift with the majority of organizations embracing technology to co-create value. 2️⃣ AI: Cautious Optimism and Bold Experimentation: Executive directors and their teams are cautiously optimistic about the possibilities of AI. Most leaders are actively experimenting with the latest GenAI tools to improve their efforts. 3️⃣ Staffing Struggles: The nonprofit sector, the third-largest employment industry in the country (behind only manufacturing and retail), is grappling with significant staffing shortages. An overwhelming 63% of organizations identified this as their greatest obstacle, shedding light on the urgent need for solutions. 4️⃣ Resilience in Action: Despite the challenges of doing more with less, nonprofits showcased incredible resilience. Our region's organizations are not just weathering the storm; they are thriving, finding creative solutions and demonstrating a strong sense of purpose.

"Since I started All Tech Is Human in 2018, I have poured my heart and soul into building the Responsible Tech movement to tackle wicked tech & society issues and have a vibrant community that promotes knowledge-sharing and collaboration. It certainly hasn’t been easy. The truth is, there were multiple times early on with the organization when I almost gave up due to our lack of financial support (we weren’t funded until summer 2021). I recall a prominent funder in the space told me that there was no need for a Responsible Tech Guide, which broke my heart. Was there a need for All Tech Is Human? Was I on the wrong path? I deeply believe that All Tech Is Human is building an organization that is quite special, which is why I didn’t give up at that moment. This was the summer of 2020 during Covid lockdown. I knew there was a need for the Responsible Tech Guide because I had been interacting with hundreds of people who attended our summits in NYC, SF, Seattle, and online who told me that they desired to be more involved with the nascent Responsible Tech movement but had no idea where to start. How do they find the others? What does the movement look like? What are the steps they can take to get involved? So I reached out to our community and the community delivered. Over 100 people volunteered to help craft the very first Responsible Tech Guide in September 2020. To get it over the finish line, I brewed a pot of coffee and typed away on my laptop at home for nearly thirty straight hours (minus bathroom breaks). Why? Because I thought the funder who turned me down was wrong and the community was right. The community always wins."
