With the new dynamic of Inverter-based resources (IBRs), power-producing devices that use electronic power converters to connect to the electrical grid asynchronously. Converting direct current (DC) electricity from renewable sources like solar panels and wind turbines into alternating current (AC) electricity for transmission on the bulk-power system. IBRs are also known as converter interfaced generation. This first extreme heat weather event should be a good indicator of how beneficial IBRs may or may not be for this region throughout the summer months.

PJM has issued a Hot Weather Alert for its entire service area, which includes all or parts of 13 states and the District of Columbia, for June 25 ahead of expected 90-plus-degree temperatures. A Hot Weather Alert is a routine procedure PJM issues ahead of forecasted 90-degree weather and/or high humidity in order to prepare transmission and generation personnel and facilities for expected increases in electricity demand. With the start of summer comes summer heat and summer pricing. PJM indicates it has enough generating resources to meet its summer peak load demand. Expect higher LMP pricing and just as important, higher levels of price volatility. Be diligent in your energy management planning for the summer.
