After 14 months of intense fighting, the situation in #Sudan is dire: 25.6 million people face crisis levels of food insecurity, meaning these households are skipping meals or using vital resources to meet food needs. 8.5 million people are facing emergency levels of hunger. They have large gaps between meals and are using all possible strategies to access food. 750,000 people on the brink of famine. In these areas, malnutrition is widespread and people are dying of starvation. The conflict in Sudan is creating unlivable conditions for the population, hunger being one of the most widespread. Humanitarian response attempts face many challenges and obstacles, but despite all these challenges, grassroots and social initiatives such as emergency rooms, hospices, and charity kitchens - with the support of philanthropists and some organizations - continue to provide food aid to many citizens exposed to hunger and diseases resulting from malnutrition. Haiti is remaining in a long-standing political, security and humanitarian crisis. Last year, there was an outbreak of cholera. More than half of Haitians are chronically food insecure, and 22 percent of children are chronically malnourished. Over a third of the population lacks access to clean water and two-thirds have limited or no sanitation service. Gang violence and the cholera outbreak may keep over 2.4 million children out of classrooms, UNICEF warned. Our hearts are with Haiti. In Sudan, nearly 5 million children have been forcibly displaced, torn from their homes by the relentless conflict. These young lives, once filled with hope and stability, are now marked by uncertainty and fear. Today, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has found children in Gaza are facing imminent famine and will die as an outright result of starvation. Our experience as humanitarians in Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia and elsewhere, tells us that when people - especially children – fall into such extreme levels of acute malnutrition, they require an immediate supervised medical and nutritional intervention rather than a one-off food assistance.
