Our variety trial with 25 different June bearers from 8 breeding programs is at the end of the harvest. Some interesting things we learnt this year: 🍓Average fruit weight of tested varieties increased by 25% in 5 years and the average yield increased by 30% in the same period 🍓Possible harvest window of 8 weeks with the same plant type and the same cultivation system, only different varieties 🍓Some "older" varieties are still competitive 🍓There are varieties that have different fruit characteristics and fruit sizes, but almost the same yield and the same harvest process 🍓With the exception of one variety, all have a good to very good taste 🍓Shelf life and plant health have improved across the board with new varieties 🍓There are two promising new varieties in the late range with very good fruit properties

𝗔 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘅 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗶 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼 A good beet variety should be distinguished not only by its high yield, but above all by its good taste, high sugar content and intense color. Over the past decade, we have been working on a strong portfolio of red beets that stand out today for their high brix levels. These values are the highest among beet varieties on the market. The plants are characterized by strong growth even in periods of stress. @Warzywa.pl, the Polish media platform for vegetables, interviewed our colleagues Marnix de Kroon and Ferdi Veenstra to hear about the developments within our company and our Red Beet program. 🌱 Marnix: “We have been running a beet breeding program for 10 years. Our work gained momentum after we collaborated with KWS. We can now use many of the techniques developed in sugar beet breeding. We also have direct access to a lot of interesting information from different scientific institutes, not only in the Netherlands. Among others, we have access to a research station in Spain, which has allowed us to speed up our work, even though the beet is a biennial plant. In the first year the plant produces a root and leaf rosette; in the second year, it forms an inflorescence shoot. The complete development cycle takes 2 years and we can now carry it out in one year.
