“We have always been inspired by the realization that hunger isn't a scarcity problem, so we've built our entire platform around solving the logistical challenges associated with food redistribution. By addressing these hurdles head-on, we aim to improve the broader problem of hunger and food waste more effectively.” – Kimberly Trouville Smith, CEO of Copia With a swelling global population and a food system that's already over-taxing water, land, and energy resources, it's imperative to tackle hunger and food insecurity sustainably. However, mere food production escalation isn’t the answer. Shockingly, nearly one-third of all food produced worldwide goes to waste – and it comes at a massive environmental and social cost. In the United States alone, the EPA estimates that food waste generates a staggering 170 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent GHG emissions annually—equivalent to the combined yearly CO2 emissions of 42 coal-fired power plants. Companies like Copia are leading the charge in this area and connecting the dots, leveraging its innovative platform to redistribute surplus food to those in need. They recognize that curbing waste isn't just about addressing food insecurity; it's about catalyzing decarbonization, easing strain on natural resources, and bolstering bottom lines.
WasteExpo is taking place in Las Vegas next week! Copia's Kimberly Trouville Smith will be trading expert knowledge with Albertsons Companies' Melissa Kral on implementing food recovery programs at large operations and generating an impact locally and globally. Over $1 trillion globally is still lost on food waste every year! 26.2 million tons of byproducts (potential ingredients) are overlooked every year in the US alone. At the same time, more than 75% of the world's top 250 food and beverage companies have publicly committed to improve their food waste reduction targets, driving increase demand for solutions like upcycling. Love what Daniel Kurzrock and the team at Upcycled Foods, Inc. (UP, Inc.) are doing to help brands tap into this trend. (Especially their work in the innovation space, allowing brands to quickly develop prototypes and scale up is a gamechanger). Ping Dan and learn more (and join great companies like Atoria's Family Bakery, Rich Products Corporation, Stone & Skillet, DeIorio Foods, Inc., etc .. in making an impact). #upcycling #innovation #foodwastereduction

At graze, we’re moving snacking forward. Our CEO, Joanna Allen, believes “that every small action is an action in the right direction, which is why we never stop striving for taster, healthier and more responsible snacks.” As a committed B Corp, we take that responsibility seriously by constantly looking for ways to move our business towards a better future. Did you know that we reduced our food waste by 11% in 2023 compared to 2022? We did this by simplifying the mixing process, improving how we cut our Oat Boosts and making small oven and recipe tweaks. We’re not going to stop there though. We’ll keep looking for ways in which we can reduce food waste, and where it’s inevitable, we’ll continue to turn waste into animal feed. Join us on our journey to better business. #BCorpMonth

Hey there, fellow eco-warriors and Happy Earth Day! Let's talk about a massive issue that's not only hurting our planet but also hitting our wallets - wasted food. Did you know that around one-third of all the food produced for us humans ends up in the trash? Crazy, right? But fear not, because at Espresso House, we're not just sitting around watching it happen - we're taking action! We're all about preventing food waste right from the get-go. We keep a close eye on our inventory, plan our food prep like pros, and make sure our products are always fresh and top-notch. Plus, since 2018, we've been teaming up with some awesome food rescue apps like ResQ Club and Too Good To Go. These partnerships let us sell off surplus food at discounted prices instead of tossing it out. It's not just about the numbers; it's about the impact. We're super grateful for our partnerships with these food rescue heroes. Their cool app solutions and know-how are key players in our mission to end food waste. But wait, there's more! We're also stepping up our game in our coffee shops. Better meal planning isn't just about being efficient; it's about showing love to our planet, keeping our customers happy, and shrinking the environmental footprint of the food service industry. So, if you're into saving the planet (and who isn't?), join us in our quest to turn food waste into a thing of the past. Let's eat responsibly and sustainably together! 🌍🍽️ #espressohouse #earthday
