Hoping this doesn't get lost in the sea of more eloquently put and planned posts. 2023 was our first full post Dobbs year. What did we do? Why should you support YHF? Funding RJ work should absolutely be on your agenda this #GivingTuesday and YHF has had the kinda year you wanna fund. 1. We trained up 25 folks from around Alabama and the Deep South in all things reproductive health and justice during our first (of many) Catalysts for Reproductive Justice Fellowship 2. We grew our team to improve our capacity. 3. The Reproraven Bus finally hit the streets, bringing needed resources across Alabama. 4. Endless community partnerships and pop up’s 5. Tens of thousands in direct mutual aide distributed 6. We helped fund the movement! Yellowhammer now works as an intermediary fund that ensures the folks on the ground doing the work have the funds they need to keep that forward momentum! 7. Because we haven’t done enough, we also are suing the Attorney General of Alabama to ensure we are not limited in the ways we can show up for Alabamians. We hope this means we can reopen our funding hotline in the future! 💜 Epilepsy Awareness Month observed throughout November shines a spotlight on epilepsy, a neurological condition that impacts countless lives. As a charitable organization that supports people with disabilities, we would like to help others better understand this condition and spread the word. This month-long initiative aims to increase understanding, support, and advocacy for individuals living with epilepsy, as well as promote education about seizure recognition and first aid. March is Trisomy Awareness Month Children with a Trisomy 13 or Trisomy 18 diagnosis are often viewed by the medical field as "incompatible with life" and not worth fighting for. Many medical facilities will not provide any form of intervention for these children. And will not refer families to doctors that may have more expertise on the diagnosis and life saving measures. At On Angels' Wings, we believe in giving families all of the information about all of the options for their child. Whatever decision fully informed parents make, we will respect and support them through it. But all too often we've seen families be told there are no options, only to find out after they've lost the child they would fight for that intervention could have happened. Giving families no choice due to lack of information is not acceptable. Children with Trisomy 13 and Trisomy 18 ARE compatible with life, and they deserve a chance if it is medically possible and what the family wants to do. OAW will continue to advocate for these children that we believe are worth celebrating, and worth fighting for!
