Charting the Course: Navigating Challenges and Opportunities in European Plastic Recycling 🌍♻️ In 2022, plastic recycling installed capacities across EU27+3 countries reached 12.5 million tonnes, showcasing a significant 10% uptick from the prior year, according to the Plastics Recyclers Europe report. Despite this, the momentum in installed plastic capacity has been steadily waning. For instance, the growth rate between 2021 and 2022 was 16%. As highlighted by Sustainable Plastics, while the figures for 2023 are still pending confirmation, a continued slowdown is anticipated. Meeting the ambitious 2025 target of 10 million tonnes of recyclates will necessitate a substantial boost to 16 million tonnes of installed recycling capacity by 2025. It's imperative to emphasize that plastic recycling in Europe must not decelerate. The momentum in plastic recycling is crucial! 🚀 To meet recycled content targets and drive the circular economy forward, we not only need further investments but also a mandatory use of recycled plastics. Fingers crossed for the Approval of the EU Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste! 🤞 This directive proposes a mandatory EU recycled content target for plastic packaging of 30% by 2030, a significant step towards a sustainable future. At RCDPlas, we firmly believe that defining ultimate targets for recycled plastics should be a collaborative effort involving institutions and value chain partners. Together, let's continue making strides in plastic recycling and building a greener tomorrow! 💚🔄 🌍♻️ Choose Recycled.
