Take a shot everytime you hear ‘publicly available data’ 😐 In a recent interview with the Wall St Journal, OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati, was stumped when asked what type of data OpenAI’s new video generation platform, SORA, had been trained on. If it's legal for AI companies to use copyrighted material for training, why the secrecy around data sources? The fact that OpenAI's own CTO couldn't or wouldn't answer that question suggests a lack of confidence in their legal stance. Keep an eye out for our post about some of the IP and data security implications of this, and why it could be so important.. This week A&O has launched our contract drafting tool, ContractMatrix, in partnership with Microsoft and Harvey. This technology isn't like other drafting tools - it really is revolutionary. I've been practising law for >25 years, using legal tech wherever as I can, and I've never seen anything like this. It's going to be a game-changer, and huge kudos to David Wakeling, Francesca Bennetts, Tom Roberts and others at Allen & Overy who have worked so hard to make this a viable product. So what does ContractMatrix actually do? Simply put: it helps lawyers work on documents. Think of it as an assistant sitting with you, who has access to whatever other documents you've given it and can sift through them all at lightning speed to answer your questions. It can draft clauses (or whole documents), amend them according to your instructions, or review how an example clause matches up against a bank of precedents. All using a natural language interface based on Harvey, which makes it easy for anyone to use. It won't replace lawyers, but it can supplement our expertise and knowledge with a wide and deep memory bank, meaning we can work at a level of performance which previously just wasn't practicable. We intend to make this widely available. ContractMatrix runs on Microsoft Azure, so we can scale it as SaaS for client and wider market use. It will also be available on Microsoft AppSource and Microsoft Azure Marketplace. We’re the only law firm in the world to have such a product available in this way. Can't wait to show this off to clients in the new year! In the meantime, happy Christmas to all and all the best for 2024. If you want some holiday reading - there's more about ContractMatrix in the Financial Times article below.

LLM International Arbitration | Criminal Caseworker | Mediator & Negotiator | Expert in Legal Research, Drafting, & Dispute Resolution
In an era where technology evolves at breakneck speed, I firmly believe it's imperative for us all, especially professionals across industries, to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) and stay abreast of global technological advancements. The future is here, and it's powered by AI. In a groundbreaking move, Allen & Overy has announced the launch of their contract drafting tool, ContractMatrix, in collaboration with Microsoft and Harvey. This innovative tool revolutionizes the process of contract drafting, review, and analysis, marking a significant leap in legal technology. I am thoroughly impressed by this initiative, which resonates with my belief in a technologically advanced future. The legal industry is on the cusp of a new era, and tools like ContractMatrix are pivotal in driving this transformation. Kudos to Allen & Overy for leading the charge in innovation and excellence. Let's not view AI as a distant concept, but as a present reality and a cornerstone for future developments. I urge my connections to join me in this journey of continuous learning and adaptation. Together, we can leverage AI to shape a smarter, more efficient, and innovative future. #legaltech #innovation #allenovery #microsoft #azure #futureoflaw #ai #technology #futurelawyers #contractmatrix

It is now generally accepted that #digitisation and its constituent parts (computation, connectivity, and devices) is set to define #economic and #geopolitical success going forward. Countries in the Gulf have been quick to identify this trend and are pushing to the forefront of #digitalinnovation and implementation. With respect to industry segments set to benefit most, or most quickly, from developments in #AI, interesting to see the recently inaugurated AI71 identify medical, educational, and legal sectors.

Less than a month ago, I visited my alma mater (highschool) in an annual careers talk to legal studies hopefuls (an article/story coming on this in a bit) and essentially told the students that my experience of law school (their future in two years; my past of 12 years) and their experiences of law school will be very different - I HOPE for their sake it will be different, because if it's not they should consider changing schools. I also told them that current technology means that by the time they get to do any human legal work it'll be a decade or more with today's current technology. After 3 seconds of shock, they expressions turned to puzzlement as to why I'm not panicking right now? and why would people even need lawyers anymore? Key is this: disruption=/= destruction At the heart of what it means to be Counsel, Advocate, Legislator, Mediator or Judge is the need for human understanding of humans. Computers are inventions of logic while humans are only beings of logic...sometimes, or even, most times, just not all the time. Counseling someone well is more than about telling them 'this is the fact', it requires understanding their needs. Advocating for someone, may also require style, flair and passion. We are legal consultants, like any other kind of consultant, we help others solve problems. People will continue to have problems that need a team of highly-skilled professionals to solve. The general public have had the tool to self-help since Google was invented and internet became cheap - and yet consultants and teachers still have jobs. Granted, the 'legal' part of the title might soon become the thing of the past as there may be increasing demands for problem solvers to solve all problems, not just the kind they prefer. This negotiation tech is a game-changer made available by lawyers but 'negotiation' is something everyone does. Well done to the team to be the first to get there! Can't wait to see how the others react to this.
