What is sound without time? What is sound without information, without matter? These were the main questions we asked ourselves during the development of EVENT HORIZON, a 15-minute sound installation accompanied by a kinetic light sculpture. This piece was one more of the inspirations for our sound journey we presented at TED Conferences (#ted2024). "In this abstract place, where there is no sound, we reach only to the power of music to try to make sense out of the relationship between SOUND AND TIME" In this art piece we decided not to use data but to draw inspiration from literature and various papers to create an auditory representation of a sound traveling through space and being sucked by a black hole, only to transform and escape from this cosmic force. We used only the sound of a recorded voice to create all the sound content, employing different methods and ideas to eliminate temporal boundaries, separating information and matter. How would you draw the sound of rain? 🎧 These are 8-year-old Edith’s drawings made as she listened to three rain sound recordings. Can you imagine what each one sounds like? One of the walls in my studio has 60 bottles, each with a label saying “rain” in a different style. I’ve been asking visitors to listen to three different rain sounds and to pair these with a bottle and a memory. Edith came along and decided to invent her own rules. She listened to each rain sound and drew what she thought it looked like. She decided it was a game for her dad. She asked him to pair each sound with her drawing. He got all three right and so did I. Her drawings are instinctive and wonderful. I love how spontaneously Edith drew each of these. Budding artists develop professional-level aesthetics before they attain professional-level skills. Boy, can that hurt. If you are a creative person, if you care about your craft, then you probably have good taste. Good taste starts from the realization that not all art is equal. Some art is better. Which is to say: some artists are better than others at making art. But when you’re just starting out, chances are your taste is leaps and bounds ahead of your talent. That’s a scary time in the career of any artist. Because you do know what “good” sounds like, but you don’t know how to make that sound yourself. Ira Glass nailed this concept back in 2009.
