In the past year, SpaceX’s net worth has climbed to estimates of $180-200 billion — so where’s the IPO?
As SpaceX continues to revolutionize space travel and exploration, many wonder why the aerospace giant hasn’t gone public yet. Why?
Well, first is the long-term vision. Elon Musk hopes to colonize Mars on a timeframe that is far longer than conventional profit-oriented missions being pursued by many space companies at the moment! By staying private, SpaceX is able to focus on this broad picture, without having to worry about updating shareholders on the day-to-day successes or failures of their mission!
And second is the flexibility afforded to pure research and development. SpaceX, by staying private, can spend more money on developing new technologies without having to worry necessarily about expectations from the market!
While an IPO might seem like the next logical step for such a high-profile company, SpaceX’s current structure supports its groundbreaking ambitions.
