As a family physician, I feel compelled to share my thoughts on a recent article discussing nurse practitioners in primary care. While it highlights the invaluable contributions of NPs, particularly in underserved areas, it misses a crucial opportunity to celebrate the strength of collaborative care models. The article paints a picture suggesting that GPs are inessential, implying that NPs alone can do everything GPs can do but better, cheaper, and with greater patient satisfaction. This perspective oversimplifies the complex nature of primary care delivery. The article quotes a patient saying, "I get more help from this practice than my old doctors," which, while positive for that individual, shouldn't be used to undermine the role of GPs across the board. I refuse to engage in divisive politics and professional infighting that pit clinicians against each other. I passionately believe that when primary care is delivered by any single profession in isolation, patients receive less than they deserve. They need the full spectrum of our combined expertise and collaborative spirit. The best care comes from diverse teams that leverage the unique strengths of various clinicians—family physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and others. The article mentions impressive satisfaction scores, noting that "80 per cent of patients were extremely likely to recommend the practice and another 20 per cent said they were very likely to do so". While commendable, these results shouldn't be used to create a false dichotomy between NPs and GPs. We should unreservedly celebrate the contributions of all primary care providers and work towards building integrated care models that truly serve our patients' needs.
