🚐 🏕️ Elkhart, Indiana, my hometown, is one of the world's major recreational vehicle (RV) manufacturing hubs, said to produce more than half of all RVs on US roads and globally. Even if you aren't planning for your #vanlife, paying attention to what's happening in the RV market makes sense. As economists have reported, broader market trends tend to mirror the RV industry. As Bloomberg's Todd Woody recently wrote, California-based Lightship and Pebble (with a team formerly with Tesla and Apple) released the "first self-propelled, battery-and-solar-powered travel trailers."         I recently heard about a new offering that is coming available from Polaris Inc. The 2024 Polaris RANGER XP Kinetic, which is an all-electric version of the already popular side-by-side that has been offered for years. This got me thinking again about the off-road applications of the electrification trend that we are seeing. While many are skeptical about an EV’s place off-road, I see it as an awesome advancement and new option, especially as new technologies develop to bring EVs down to a more reasonable price point. Electric drivetrains bring some significant advantages to the table, even setting aside the topic of environmental impact that can ruffle some feathers.               First off, the torque. Torque specs are important to off-roaders as when you come up against an obstacle, it is the torque that gets you up and over. With an electric motor you can get all the torque you need instantly at any speed, giving you more control over the traditional ICE. Then there’s the center of gravity. When off-roading we like our lift kits, getting the vehicle farther from the ground increasing that clearance to let us get through tougher terrain. A problem that current ICE vehicles run into is the danger of rollovers increasing as you raise the center of gravity. That problem is remedied in Electric vehicles as the battery is often placed lower, along with the motors, making that center of gravity much lower than traditional off roaders, increasing the stability. Another awesome perk is the ability to enjoy the ride, and the nature, a little bit easier. Now, I enjoy the rumble of a good V8 just as much as the next guy, but often when it comes to my time out in nature, it's nice to just hear the nature around you like a nice hike. With electric off-roading you can combine the peaceful experience of hiking with the thrill of off-roading.               Of course, there are still some downsides, the main one on everyone’s mind being the range and the fact that you can’t just pack a jerry can of electricity with you like you can gas. However, I think the electric advantages are significant, and with the technology we are seeing advancing the downsides keep fading away. The advantages I talked about here are just a couple, scratching the surface, what advantages do you see in electric off-roading?
