Recently, I had the opportunity to honor my Latvian roots and give a talk on the differences between managing #interiordesign projects in the USA, where I reside, and Europe, where I am originally from. I highlighted items like measuring systems - metric vs imperial, developing custom designs versus off-the-shelf components, differences in client expectations, and many more. I took a trip down memory lane of establishing the #POMESCIKOVA design studio in California while sharing key insights for designers curious to work with international clients. Throughout the decades, an irreplaceable part of my design process has been getting to know each client as closely as possible. This principle holds both in the US and Europe. Only by understanding our client’s aspirations, daily habits, and personalities can a truly original and personal design be created. That magic our clients feel with the uplift in the quality of their lives is the essence of my "why" as an #interiordesigner. Looking forward to sharing my experience as a European interior designer working in the US market.

The kitchen is a significant part of any home, serving as a central place to gather and enjoy cooking with friends and family. Nowadays, most living spaces are designed with an open layout, often combining the kitchen with dining and living rooms. However, in this project, our clients, who are passionate cooks, wanted to separate their kitchen to prevent scents from escaping the room. To maintain the flow of light while creating a divide, we designed a glass wall solution with an integrated glass door. It brings in natural light from the kitchen windows, creates a sense of spaciousness, and provides separation all at once. Moreover, the glass wall ensures that the kitchen is visually connected to the dining and living rooms, allowing family and friends to enjoy each other's company while being in separate spaces. All of us age sooner or later, and we believe everyone deserves to live in a comfortable and beautiful environment. Our team designed this high-end senior living residence in Auburn, California, with the utmost respect for its future residents. We are making good progress on the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Here is our update with 3D visuals for the main lobby area. All finishing materials are selected, custom furniture - reception, shelves, paneling - designed, and the custom fireplace with integrated pendants is in development. We are happy to cooperate with Thomas Ramey, a talented artist, to bring this focal piece to life! At this stage of the project, supervision is key. We hold weekly meetings to ensure any unexpected issues are identified early and addressed throughout the construction process. Redoing anything is very costly and time-consuming, so building it right from the start is the goal of every developer and property owner. Excellent advice for business and private communication.

I am deeply grateful for the year 2023 - it has been full of excitement and productivity. We initiated international projects requiring us to learn new things and travel more. We also continued working on various residential interior and landscape projects, along with some large-scale hospitality and healthcare projects in the US, which we are eagerly looking forward to continuing in 2024. I am also thankful to all my friends and acquaintances who have trusted and referred us! Thanks to my designers, drafters, and contractors for their patience working with me. It takes time to build a relationship and trust between the designer and client, but it certainly is a key element for a successful outcome. For us, design work isn't just about developing and finalizing a project - we care deeply about our clients. The more we know about their lifestyle, needs, and dreams, the more thorough our service becomes. When we first met the owner of this beautiful house, the client was slightly reserved and hesitant to share his true wishes. So, we started working on a small guest house. When the client was happy with the result, he invited us to design the main house, then another house and an apartment, and many other projects afterward. This transitional-style kitchen and dining room is located on the first floor. We designed it for everyday use and special occasions with timelessness in mind. Working with the highest quality materials, furniture, lighting, and accessories is a dream come true for every designer! Some walls in this space are covered with wallpaper by gorgeous de Gournay, the lighting fixtures are by Serip, our long-term favorites, and custom-designed sucupira flooring was made by the excellent Heritage Parquet. Relins made the custom furniture, and the talented Inga Jurova and Kalvis Zalitis created the nuanced murals on the ceiling. The exterior of a house and its front yard reflect the owner's personality. Like it or not... when we see beautifully designed and neatly landscaped homes, we associate them with success and a well-organized lifestyle. In most cases, keeping your front yard in good shape can be pretty resource-intensive, but after serving many clients in the Bay area, we've found design solutions that allow them to enjoy a beautiful garden without the hassle of constant upkeep. We recommend selecting extra low-maintenance plants, designing smart watering and lighting systems, and choosing the right ground cover materials for the space and purpose. Many interior designs reflect the latest trends, making them enjoyable for a limited time - usually, 5-10 years in commercial projects or 10-20 years in residential spaces. However, some designs are made to last for generations, and such projects require long-lasting vision and solutions, outstanding materials, and workmanship. We are very proud when revisiting some of our work and seeing that it stands the test of time. One such timeless home designed by POMESCIKOVA is a place to witness that genuine craftsmanship is very much alive in the 21st century! We will show more details from this project in future posts, but here you can see the beautiful stair landing and elevator floor, inspired by world-famous William Morris patterns and made by the incredible team at Heritage Parquet. The best recreational spaces follow a common design theme - even staircases and waiting areas shouldn't interrupt that flow. Remodeling spaces in historic buildings is never easy, requiring meticulous teamwork from clients, designers, architects, engineers, and contractors, but the result is always worth it! This spa (Kurshi SPA) is located on the first floor and basement of a remodeled old building adjacent to a hotel. The proximity to the sea is felt throughout the rooms and is reflected in the original wall lamps in the shape of clam shells by the talented ceramic artist Kristine Djacenko.
