Great news during Women's History Month! President Biden announced today critical funding to address the gap in women's health care. International Women's Day is a moment to celebrate the incredible strides women have made, both historically and in the present. The recent The White House initiative focusing on women's health is a welcome step, recognizing the importance of affordable and accessible healthcare for all women (1). However, significant challenges remain on the path to true gender equity and inclusion. Issues like access to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade highlight the ongoing fight for women's reproductive rights (2). Internationally, women face a multitude of hardships. Period poverty affects millions, denying them basic sanitary hygiene products (3). Early pregnancies often derail educational opportunities, trapping women in a cycle of poverty (4). Intimate partner violence continues to plague women globally, leaving them physically and emotionally scarred, and sinking them further into poverty (5). Maternal mortality rates, especially among Black women in the US, remain unacceptably high, often due to preventable health issues and implicit bias in healthcare systems (6). The corporate world is another arena demanding change. Women continue to struggle for equal footing on the corporate ladder, facing underrepresentation in leadership positions and persistent pay gaps (7). International Women's Day serves as a powerful reminder of the work still needed. We must celebrate the progress made while amplifying the voices of those facing ongoing challenges. Let's use this day to recommit ourselves to building a world where all women, regardless of background or circumstance, have the opportunity to thrive. We know that prevalent gaps exist in our health system, especially as it relates to health and gender. Health equity and gender equity go hand in hand. We've come a long way, but there is still work to be done to improve women's health outcomes. A significant barrier is the lack of funding. Currently, only 4% of healthcare research spending goes towards conditions that primarily affect women. That's why we're excited about the Biden-Harris Administration's recent announcement: the "ARPA-H Sprint for Women's Health." This new initiative will invest $100 million to accelerate women's health research. With more funding like this, closing the gender health gap becomes more possible. Today is the day we celebrate International Women’s Day. And as such, I would like to share a little insight into women’s health, a topic that is very important to me and my colleagues alike (KJ Park, Andrea Ott, & Martina Schuldt). The transformation in the landscape of women's health is indeed a significant and long-overdue shift. It represents a movement towards recognizing the diverse needs and experiences of women, including those from marginalized communities. The strides made in normalizing discussions around menstruation, embracing sexual pleasure, and advocating for reproductive autonomy mark important milestones in women's healthcare. However, the journey towards equitable and inclusive healthcare is still ongoing. Despite being half of the global population, women, especially BIPOC women, continue to encounter disparities in access to and quality of healthcare. Addressing these disparities requires not only increasing representation in healthcare leadership and research but also dismantling systemic barriers that perpetuate inequalities. Over the past few years, the growing focus on women's health presents opportunities for innovation and investment in areas such as personalized medicine, digital health solutions, and reproductive technologies. By prioritizing women's health, we not only improve individual outcomes but also contribute to broader societal well-being and economic prosperity. As a woman, recognizing and advocating for our own health needs is crucial. By embracing our bodies and advocating for inclusive and comprehensive care, we empower ourselves and future generations to prioritize their health. #womenshealth #womenhistorymonth #girlsempowerment

President Biden's latest executive order and announcement are monumental steps forward for women's health research and innovation! Launching a new NIH-wide effort that will direct key investments of $200 million in Fiscal Year 2025 to fund new, interdisciplinary women’s health research—a first step towards the transformative central Fund on Women’s Health that the President has called on Congress to invest in. These actions build on the First Lady’s announcement last month of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) Sprint for Women’s Health, which committed $100 million towards transformative research and development in women’s health. ✨ Highlights of the announcement include: ◾ ARPA-H’s Sprint for Women’s Health committing $100 million to groundbreaking research and development. ◾ A 50% increase in investments by NIH's Small Business Innovation Research Program to support innovators in women’s health. ◾ NIH's efforts to standardize data for research on women’s health, enhancing data collection and analysis. While the intentions behind offering thoughts and prayers are undoubtedly noble, it is high time we pivot from passive empathy to proactive empowerment. The landscape of clinical trials and research in women's health presents a stark tableau of oversight and underrepresentation. This scenario is even more pronounced for minority women, who stand as the most underserved demographic in clinical research. Such a disparity is not merely a statistic but a reflection of systemic inertia that we must vigorously challenge. Amidst the echoes of advocacy for holistic and botanical interventions in addressing women's health crises, one cannot help but notice the subtle undertones of gaslighting—an insidious suggestion that the current deficiencies in research and resource allocation are mere figments of collective imagination. Let us be unequivocally clear: The scarcity is real, the neglect is tangible, and the repercussions are profoundly detrimental. Our current healthcare challenges, exacerbated by environmental conditions, underscore the urgency of diversifying and expanding clinical research.
