May is Small Business Month! It’s a time to celebrate small businesses - their courage, community efforts, and hard work. Small businesses are the backbone of the United States! 💪🏽 To celebrate Small Business Month, here are some small business facts from the SBA: - 99.9% of American businesses are small businesses. - There are 33,185,550 small businesses in the United States. - Small businesses employ 61.7 million Americans, totaling 46.4% of private sector employees. - Small businesses pay 39.4% percent of private sector payroll. #smallbusiness #smallbusinessowner #BridgetownMusicTherapy #entrepreneur #womanowned

Small business is the backbone of our economy. Predictability, stability, and a belief in the future are all necessary ingredients to keep entrepreneurs and small-business owners confident enough to take the risk in building new companies. Small businesses are responsible for the majority of new job creation over the past decade. Policies that support small business generation are key to economic growth for the middle class and our local communities.

Covington's innovative Small Business Program is creating a buzz in the business world, effectively supporting new and growing businesses while preserving the city's historical heritage. The program, which offers diverse incentives from rent subsidies to forgivable loans for commercial improvements, is already significantly benefiting the local business community. Golden Gelato, a popular local dessert shop, is one of the beneficiaries of the Historic Signage grant, enhancing their storefront while maintaining the city's charm. The program's impact is not limited to new businesses. It also supports existing businesses planning substantial expansions, thus fostering growth and innovation in Covington's economy. With 132 projects supported since its inception in 2022, the program is driving job creation and contributing to the diversity of the local business landscape. Interestingly, a significant proportion of the businesses supported are owned by minorities, women, and military veterans, demonstrating the city's commitment to equal opportunities. The program's effectiveness has been recognized with an award from the International Economic Development Council in 2021, a testament to its contribution to the city's economic development. As the application deadline for the next round of incentives draws near (December 29), now is the time for businesses to seize this opportunity. Celebrating Small Business Month "May marks Small Business Month in the United States, and there’s plenty to celebrate. For a start, small firms make up the vast majority (over 99 percent) of all businesses in America and provide jobs for tens of millions of people (“nearly half of all U.S. employees are employed by a small business,” notes a Forbes article posted earlier this year). Small businesses range from mom-and-pop corner convenience stores to high-tech startups run by computer geeks with dreams of becoming the next Microsoft Corporation. Small businesses can be organized as a sole proprietorship, a partnership, a corporation, or other legal entities. If small businesses come in a variety of formats and offer different goods and services, some hard and fast rules do apply to the sector. To qualify as a small business, a firm must be independent and have fewer than 500 employees, states a March 2023 report from the Office of Advocacy with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)." It's small business Saturday, and alongside every other small business in our great, entrepreneurial country, Waypoint Collective encourages you to show your support today (and every day!) for small businesses that make up such a significant part of our economic landscape. I'm always so amazed by the dedication, creativity and tireless work it takes to get an idea (a product, an innovation, a shop, even a small agency!) off the ground. Today is about more than going to a local boutique instead of a big box store; it's about supporting the notion that some of the best ideas, products and services come in small packages. As well as the economic rationale of supporting small businesses which are far more likely to be women and minority-owned and led - all per the SBA report linked below.
