IPM Post 187: A (non)sticky situation. A flying insect light trap was installed in a waste room to monitor and interdict flies. A few flies had soon entrapped themselves on the surface, but only on a relatively tiny portion of the available real estate. As is obvious from the video, critical portions of the glue plate were anything but tacky. Rarely, some plates may not have been well coated with adhesive. Other times, the glue may be encumbered with dust or insects, or it has been removed or rendered non-sticky because of overspray from pressure washing nearby. The take home message? Be mindful of what’s on – or not on - the monitoring traps. Too often, such devices are eye candy to demonstrate effort. Instead, the glue plates should be periodically examined to assess what’s recently been on the wing. That data can then inform efforts to seek the cause of new or worsening problems and to drive appropriate interventions.  #IPM #pest #monitoring #surveillance #trap #insect #flies
