Let’s talk about organisational ‘diversity and inclusion’ policies and tokenism. Over the past couple of weeks, Australia witnessed Fatima Payman being aggressively targeted by the Labor Party’s caucus and various media outlets. Fatima Payman was clearly recruited initially by the Australian Labor Party to ensure that they adhered to a quota of people from diverse backgrounds. Throughout her time as a Labor Party member, Fatima had visibly struggled from day to day trying to adhere to the Labor Party caucus’ directions, yet she was not able to maintain the status quo because clearly their values did not align with hers. Once Senator Payman had finally opened up and voiced her real opinion voting from her conscience, she was only then liberated. However, unfortunately, instead, it uncovered the truth about diversity and inclusion policies. It revealed that such policies are only there, practically, to tick the box in terms of compliance around diversity and not necessarily to endorse the inclusion they speak of. This shines a light on whether businesses really do allow for diversity of opinion. It is time to ask yourself, does your business really include people or do you only simply want to tick that box ? Ask your staff.
