Did you know the Queensland Government has invested more than $1 billion since 2015 to safeguard the Reef? We're also phasing out the use of gill nets for fishing by mid-2027 so we can better protect our Reef’s threatened and iconic species, like the dugong. Dugongs are one of the iconic species keeping the Great Barrier Reef balanced and in check 🌊 🐄 These gentle giants are a cultural keystone species to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living along the Reef and play an important role in the health of seagrass meadows through seed dispersal and germination 🌱 They are classified as 'vulnerable' by both the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Queensland Government's Nature Conservation Regulation. Our efforts can ensure that these magnificent creatures continue to thrive in the waters of this remarkable natural wonder for generations to come. #QueenslandEnvironment

DCR’s Natural Heritage Program Karst Protection Coordinator Wil Orndorff coauthored the Virginia Museum of Natural History’s new special publication, The Groundwater Isopods of Virginia (Isopoda: Asellidae and Cirolanidae). Why? Because Virginia has the most diverse array of aquatic isopods living in groundwater-related habitats of any state in the United States. There are 44 species occurring in Virginia’s karst habitats (caves and springs) of the Appalachian Valley and Ridge Province and in shallow groundwater habitats of the Atlantic Coastal Plain Province. An overview of the groundwater isopod fauna of Virginia and the adjacent regions indicates that many species are highly vulnerable. ⚠️ Out of 53 species studied, conservation status rankings suggest that 26 are critically imperiled, 15 are imperiled, 6 are vulnerable and only 6 are secure. A very relevant and concerning report on apparent decline of large marine mammals off the west coast of Ireland. Clearly more surveys are needed, but also actions to arrest the wider problems that are arising in our marine ecosystem. I have noticed great change over decades since the 1960s; some subtle (such as in seashore assemblages and rock pools), different marine algae, enormous decline in crustaceans, sea urchins almost disappeared, and invasive species establishing. Who is putting all this together? Marine reserves are well and good but usually far too small.

Meet an important reef architect in this week’s #CoralCloseup - the Staghorn Coral (Acropora cervicornis) Ecosystem Architects: -Staghorn coral thrives in the Caribbean Sea and Florida Keys, forming "thickets" that offer crucial habitat for a diverse array of marine life. -Its unique antler-like branches and rapid growth, up to 8 inches per year, contributing to the structural complexity and resilience of coral reefs. Environmental Adversities: -Despite its once abundant presence, Staghorn coral populations have dramatically dwindled to less than 3% of their original size. -Key threats include ocean warming leading to coral bleaching, acidification hindering skeletal building, overfishing affecting ecosystem balance, and pollution from land-based sources degrading water quality. Restoration Strategies: -Fragments of Staghorn coral are nurtured on our Coral Trees™, enabling them to mature into robust colonies ready for future reef integration through out planting. -CRF has revitalized over 17,500 square meters of Florida's Coral Reef, demonstrating the success of targeted restoration efforts in promoting coral health and ecosystem integrity. NEW REPORT with Irish Whale and Dolphin Group 🐳⛵️ Five-month operation surveyed +3200 kms of Cork, Kerry & Clare coast. Fresh concerns about lack of monitoring of inshore waters by the state and the latest piece of research pointing to harbour porpoise decline. Irish Whale and Dolphin Group Science Officer and Fair Seas Partner Rebecca Dudley says theirs is the latest piece of research that points to the issue: “Harbour porpoise numbers have been shown to be in decline off many parts of Ireland in recent years. We need more research to explore the drivers behind the decline but it is undoubtedly a cause for concern, given the importance of this species to our Special Areas of Conservation. It is disappointing to see that still no management plans for these supposedly ‘protected areas’ have been developed by the Government. It’s vitally important that additional state resources are allocated to this kind of research. We are lucky to have a group of dedicated volunteers working with us, but effective monitoring of what’s going on in the water off our coastline is a mammoth task and beyond the scope of groups like our own. If the Irish Government is to meet its target of protecting 30% of Irish waters with Marine Protected Areas by 2030, then monitoring must drastically increase along with robust management plans for all designated areas.
