A special salute to Lieutenant Colonel Don Weyler, US Army (Ret.) for authoring the critically important section of our new book, Win The Job & Thrive In A Multigenerational Workplace, focused on helping military Veterans make a successful transition to the civilian sector. Having grown up at the United States Military Academy at West Point with my dad, Colonel Harold Beal, and having attended the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, the #military has always been a passion in my family. My brother and sister were Colonels who served during a time of combat in Iraq. With that, me and my co-authors, Frank Kovacs, CRISC CDPSE and Kadeer A. Porter, M.S., are honored that Lieutentant Colonel Don Weyler authored this valuable section of the book. Below is an excerpt. https://lnkd.in/eD2B_Fpw As this is the military to civilian transition portion of this book, let me tell my transition story in the “war story” language my military family can relate to best: “So there I was...” concluding a 22-year career in the Army. I had the great honor and pleasure to start my career as a logistics officer, right out of college. I had opportunities to lead organizations, support operations and plan and execute process improvements to provide the best possible support to our service members in combat, peace keeping operations and here in the U.S. During that career, I learned that the military is a great #leadership laboratory and provides service members with a career map of various options to advance careers and provide maximum value to their respective service. As I began the transition to a civilian career, I realized that unlike the military, there is not one cohesive map. There is not a clear direction. The transition can be daunting. In fact, it could be your next “War story”, but it doesn’t have to be.

As part of #ArmedForces week, today marks specific recognition of those in our Reserve Armed Forces. You might even spot some wearing their military uniform to their civilian work today, where safe and practicable. Reservists are commonly cited as "twice the citizen" as they choose to support the Armed Forces in their spare time, typically during the evenings and weekends, but occasionally full-time when the country needs additional support. I was an Army Reservist for 13 years. I had a huge amount of opportunities presented to me which helped my professional development, which, in turn, my employers were able to benefit from. Whether that was transferring ideas/best practice/working models to/from the military and civilian worlds, or in the training & experience I gained in leadership and operational roles. 12 JULY 1862 – ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MEDAL OF HONOR : On 12 July 1862, while the nation was engaged in the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the measure that called for a U.S. Army Medal of Honor, to be awarded in the name of Congress, “to such noncommissioned officers and privates as shall most distinguish themselves by their gallantry in action, and other soldier-like qualities during the present insurrection.” Lincoln had approved a similar provision that created a U.S. Navy Medal of Valor, which provided the basis of the Army Medal of Honor created by Congress in July 1862. As noted, the Medal of Honor was originally intended to be an award to enlisted members, but in 1863, when the Medal of Honor became a permanent military decoration, it also became available to all members of the Armed Forces, including commissioned officers. The medal is reserved for recognizing those military personnel who have distinguished themselves by "conspicuous gallantry" in actual combat at the risk of life beyond the call of duty. Since its creation in 1862, more than 3,400 men and one woman of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard have received the Medal of Honor for heroic actions. The official name of the award is the Medal of Honor and is awarded by the president in the name of Congress. It is not "The Congressional Medal of Honor." The first U.S. Army recipients of the Medal of Honor were six members of a raiding party who penetrated deep into Confederate territory during the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862.

Happy birthday to the US Air Force! The U.S. Air Force was officially founded on 18 September 1947, and in the decades since it has established itself as an air force second-to-none. Between 1909 -- when that the US military purchased its first aircraft -- and 1947, the U.S. Air Force did not exist as a separate and independent military service organization. It went through a series of designations: Aeronautical Section, Signal Corps (1909); Aviation Section, Signal Corps (1914); United States Army Air Service (1918); United States Army Air Corps (1926), and United States Army Air Forces (1941). WWII illustrated the value of airpower, and the need to change the basic organization of the US Military Forces. The result was the creation of a single Department of Defense with a strong Joint Chiefs of Staff with Army, Navy, and Air Force chiefs. In 1947 President Truman signed the National Security Act which established this new defense organization, and along with it the creation of the US Air Force as an independent service, equal to the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.  #proudveteran #goairforce #aimhigh #higherfurtherfaster

What military term makes me roll my eyes more than any other? Joint Today’s military leaders love to say that “joint” operations between services and allies are 🇺🇸’s greatest strength. But how can anyone claim the DoD works “jointly” if they exclude an entire service?? After months of searching I have not been able to find a single US Merchant Marine captain working in any of the following places: The Pentagon Joint Chiefs of Staff Commbatant Commands National Security Council War colleges Leading think tanks NATO Sure we have Strategic Sealift officers in our Navy reserves but very few fill senior staff positions. Sure we have a small handful of US Merchant Mariners working for Military Sealift Command in places like the Naval War College but replenishment is very different from sealift and supply. And I can find no evidence that we are working “jointly” with two of the five largest allied naval organizations on the planet: #1) The Philippines Merchant Marine #5)The Ukraine Merchant Marine Most troubling is the fact when I question an Army or USAF General about this they usually turn to a Navy Admiral for advice. Problem is the US Merchant Marine is NOT part of the Navy any more than the US Coast Guard is. It should not be the Navy’s job to advocate for us. It should be everyone who preaches “joint” operations to reach out to us directly. Until that happens the term “joint” rings hollow. P.S. Why did I not call out US Marine Corps Generals? Because USMC logistics officers have already started welcoming us to the planning table. P.S.2. Why should Army and US Air Force flag officers care? I’ll let General Pershing answer that question:

Only the U.S Army and the U.S. Navy can take my military discharge code of RE-3 and the future is uncertain so an age waiver for military service might be needed. You also got people in politics, the lawyers, and the Army general that got to Miami, FL in 2021. According to U.S. Navy in theory, I might not need to repeat bootcamp and maybe with the Army. The Air Force don’t usually take prior service first because new applicants comes first. I know that Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard doesn’t take RE-3. The Air Force always works with the Army. Regular people that fail bootcamp in the Army have to repeat bootcamp in the Air Force too.
