Today, we’re launching a project that is very close to my heart. As you can probably tell from the things I post, dogs play a huge role in my life. They bring love, joy, companionship – not to mention the proven physical and mental health benefits. Pets in happy homes is a win-win for the pet and the owner. But not all pets have the care they need, with millions of dogs and cats living on the streets or in shelters. In fact, 1 in 3 pets are homeless.   That’s why Mars set out, alongside leading animal welfare experts, to understand how so many pets end up homeless. And today, we’re releasing open-source data to not only be smarter with the actions we take, but to help others take action too. Moving from treating the symptoms to really solving the root causes.   It's a complex challenge, but understanding the contributing factors is a crucial step so that targeted action can follow. We’re marking the launch with a $500,000 donation to Humane Society International to help fund work informed by the data to support thousands of pets in need.   Thanks to the external partners and Associates leading this work and constantly striving towards: A Better World for Pets.   You can read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/edwJ8XZq.   #abetterworldforpets #stateofpethomelessness #proudlymars

Such important information. The change we want to see starts with understanding what needs to change - thank you for sharing this!

This is great, and I hope this takes off and has a huge impact to save dogs who can and should be rescued, and reduce the number of dogs needing to be rescued. With that said, people need to stop preaching that ALL dogs should be rescued, and that breeding is selfish and wrong. To the contrary, if there were more responsible breeders, and if people sourced well-bred dogs, we wouldn't see so many dogs being abandoned. Behavioral issues are the number one reason for dog abandonment, and much of this is a result of accidental or careless breeding. A well bred dog, on the other hand, will have the temperament, disposition and intelligence that is characteristic of its breed. Just my two cents and worth every penny...

We just adopted our first family fur baby (Niko) last March from our local shelter. We thought we were rescuing him - oh my, how much he’s enriched OUR lives 🎉🐶

Just another amazing initiative by Mars. As a retired Mars associate we love our 4 Shelter cats as they bring so much joy into our lives every single day. Our last kitten followed us home from our neighborhood mail boxes. After trying to see if anyone lost him, with no luck, we took him to Banfield’s where no microchip was found. We had him fixed and signed him up for their care program. Animals bring so much happiness and shelter animal really appreciate being adopted.

What an incredible initiative! Mars! Your commitment to understanding and tackling the root causes of pet homelessness is truly commendable. The open-source data initiative is a game-changer, inspiring positive action beyond your organization. Here's to creating a world where every pet finds a loving home. #heystack

Excellent news from Mars Petcare - why anyone would feel the need to buy a ‘new’ puppy when you can rescue virtually any breed you like from a shelter and btw for a fraction of the cost is a mystery!

Dogs are the best and I have 4 rescue cats and a rescue dog that have given lots of love and support to the family during tough times. Getting rescue pets is really hard with long and inefficient processes that are designed locally and personally to protect the animals which is essential but it can be streamlined. A third of our animals homeless is a tragedy that can be improved.
