Due to the new energy industry and the rise of new energy vehicles, silicon carbide devices have been developing very rapidly in recent years. Many semiconductor companies, including some domestic companies, are engaged in the development and production of silicon carbide devices. #ONSemiconductor is the world's second largest power #semiconductor manufacturer, with a global market share of 9% in 2022, but its compound annual growth rate is as high as 38%. The importance of silicon carbide in ON's power business is evident. So how is On Semiconductor's silicon carbide business achieving these growth milestones? Or why do premium customers tend to choose ON Semiconductor products? At the recent Onsenmi 2023 media conference, Mr Hassane El-Khoury, President and CEO of ON Semiconductor, and Mr Simon Keeton, Executive Vice President and General Manager of ON Semiconductor's Power Solutions Division, provided us with the answers. Firstly, ON Semiconductor has a strong and reliable supply capability. Manufacturing capability is a traditional strength of ON Semiconductor, which has always had its own wafer fabs and in-house packaging factories. Two years ago, ON Semiconductor replenished its substrate capacity through its Hudson facility, and now has achieved a 10-fold increase in substrate production, a 12-fold increase in die production, a 4-fold increase in packaging capacity, and a 3-fold increase in the number of new product releases. With a fully vertically integrated silicon carbide production chain, ON Semiconductor ensures that its supply capacity is not affected by fluctuations in external factors. During the epidemic, automakers had suffered from conservative chip shortages, and many models had to be discontinued due to a lack of chips, resulting in huge losses. As a result, a large number of customers, including Volkswagen and Extreme Krypton, hedged against possible future risks by signing long-term supply agreements with ON Semiconductor. In the industrial market, eight of the world's 10 largest energy infrastructure customers have long-term supply agreements with ON Semiconductor. Beyond capacity, and more importantly at the technology level, ON's products are better able to meet customer needs, said Mr Hassane El-Khoury, who said that in the past three years, since he joined ON in 2020, ON's culture has undergone a 180-degree shift: innovation leads manufacturing, rather than manufacturing leading to increased production. Innovation comes from real-world applications, from collaboration and communication with customers. Based on this, ON Semiconductor has established application joint labs with many of its customers. Through the joint laboratory, ON Semiconductor has the foresight for future products, and can see what kind of products customers need in the next 5-10 years at the application level, so as to provide the best solutions for customers' end-use applications at the level of substrate, device, and package. #lusengz #SiC

In October, the US saw a significant surge in the construction of manufacturing plants, with $18.5 billion invested, marking a 73% increase from the previous year and substantial growth over the past two years. The remarkable aspect is the consistent month-to-month acceleration, rising from $12.5 billion in January to $18.5 billion in October. The construction boom, initiated in early to mid-2021, tripled spending by July 2022, when Congress passed a subsidy package, particularly benefiting industries like semiconductor and EV battery makers, with a substantial portion of the funds disbursed in 2023. The European Commission has therefore proposed a comprehensive strategy aimed at establishing EU leadership in the field of advanced materials, which are crucial for the green and digital transition. Annual patent filings on batteries have risen by 15% per year over the past decade owing to the financial support for R&D. With advancements enhancing energy density and reducing costs, the attractiveness of batteries surged, leading to an increase in demand. Over the past three decades, this demand has expanded at an impressive average yearly rate of 33%. Initially, the boom was fuelled by the electronics sector, including cell phones, laptops, and various specialised applications, which shaped the way for market expansion and subsequent innovations. Investments in research and development by both corporations and governmental bodies have been important in advancing these improvements in energy density and affordability. This influx of funding into fundamental battery research contributed to a rapid expansion of the battery research community. In fact, academic studies focusing on batteries have seen a fivefold increase over the last ten years. As financial support for R&D intensified, so did the pace of technological advancements. The rate of battery-related patent applications has grown by 15% annually over the same period. By 2018, the latest year for which complete data is available, the number of patents applied for within that year had more than doubled compared to just seven years prior.
