During a period with a reduced baseload generation, Niagara's ability to generate more power has helped reduce overall system costs and lower emissions. 100 years of carbon-free power and counting! Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Niagara hydro operations are set to undergo an extensive multi-year refurbishment of the company’s five hydroelectric plants in Niagara including the 1.9-gigawatt (GW) Sir Adam Beck I and II hydroelectric generating stations. Sir Adam Beck I has been operating for more than 100 years. The first phase of the C$1-billion project will refurbish up to 25 units at Adam Beck I and II. The project will start in 2025, and last 15 years. GE Vernova is OPG’s project partner. In 2023, OPG’s Niagara hydroelectric stations recorded the highest electricity production in more than 40 years. The 13.2 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity represented an increase of 0.5 TWh from the previous year and the region’s highest output since 1982. OPG’s stations in Niagara meet about 9% of Ontario’s energy needs. New case study: Hamilton WwTW - The installation of the UK’s first containerised, mid-process hydroelectric turbine at a wastewater treatment works In line with the Scottish Government’s move towards a Low Carbon Economy, Scottish Water has committed to achieving its strategic ambition of ‘Beyond Net Zero’ by 2040. Driven by this ambition, the public utility tasked its commercial subsidiary, Scottish Water Horizons, to review its asset base to identify and accelerate opportunities for renewable energy generation. At Hamilton WwTW, the new aeration lanes were built above-ground and sit proud of the rest of the works, and it was determined that capturing the flow between the new aeration tanks and the final settlement would provide 10m of head which is further extended to 11.5m by use of a draft tube, and an average annual flow of 432 l/s. This provided the opportunity to develop a 48 kW hydropower scheme. Hydro Québec has begun early-stage talks with a number of financiers and other potential partners as it plans how to carry out a $185-billion strategy for new energy infrastructure that aims to wean Quebec off fossil fuels . The utility, Canada’s biggest producer of hydroelectricity, will spend as much as $110-billion from now until 2035 on new clean-power generation facilities and another $50-billion to improve the reliability of its electrical grid under a plan unveiled last November. Additional operating expenses will make up the balance of the estimated spending. 🇮🇳The power ministry is reworking its planned hydro power policy in order to carve out a ₹4,000 crore grant for North-eastern states as a separate scheme. 📑The initial draft included the grant for North-eastern states to take up equity in hydro projects and provide the required investment. Policy will include budgetary support for building infrastructure for hydro power projects, including roads and transmission lines. 🌊India has a hydropower capacity of 52 gigawatts (GW) with another 18GW either in the implementation stage or bid out. #Tarbela 5th Extension #Hydropower Project Set to Begin #PowerGeneration in August 2025 The Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project, a significant venture aimed at enhancing Pakistan's renewable energy capacity, is scheduled to start generating electricity in August 2025. Financially supported by the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure #InvestmentBank (AIIB) with contributions of US$ 390 million and US$ 300 million respectively, this project marks a crucial step forward in the sustainable development of the region's power infrastructure. Upon completion, the installed capacity at Tarbela Dam will see a substantial increase, moving from 4888 MW to 6418 MW, thereby significantly boosting the nation's power generation capabilities.
