Meet Sri Sankaran, Reliability and Test Engineer at Proterra! Tell us about you background and where did you grow up? I am from India and grew up in a south-eastern coastal city called Chennai. I came to the U.S. do my Masters in Mechanical Engineering at North Carolina State University and spent 10 years testing & validating diesel engines at Cummins. What do you enjoy most about your role at Proterra? Since high voltage battery technology for commercial vehicles is still a nascent industry, we encounter a variety of questions that we have to solve for. The opportunity to dig into the barely known topics and solve problems for the team is extremely fun. What motivated you to join the clean transportation industry? I had spent ~11 years working on commercial vehicle powertrains. Decarbonizing the commercial vehicle sector by providing ample zero-emission public transportation and hauling options can have a bigger impact than cleaning up the pass-car market. Switching to an opportunity to learn and contribute in this field was a no-brainer!

A giant ship's engine broke down and no one could repair it, so they hired a Mechanical Engineer with over 30 years of experience. He inspected the engine very carefully, from top to bottom. After seeing everything, the engineer unloaded his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He knocked something gently. Soon, the engine came to life again. The engine has been fixed! A week later the engineer mentioned to the ship owner that the total cost of repairing the giant ship was $20,000. "What?!" said the owner. "You did almost nothing. Give us a detailed bill." 𝙍𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮, 𝘾𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙎𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨, 𝘾𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 It seems is a tendency that cars no longer include Temperature Indicator. The reason? I want to think components are much reliable than they were years ago. But as an enthusiastic technician I realize overheating is one of the most common combustion engines issues on the roads. And as an Automotive Engineer I am aware Cooling Systems Reliability depends on the reliability of their independent components: Radiator, Cooling fan, Electrical wiring, Pipes, Reservoir/Radiator cap, Coolant sensor. In a simple way Reliability of the whole system -for a 0.99 reliability on each component- give us 0.99 powered to 6 which equals 0.94. It seems there is something that does not match, I mean potential of failure in the system can increase rapidily as the reliability in the components decrease. Strategy? Cost saving? Who knows! In cell production, Electrolyte Filling is the process step where we fill in the cell the media which will enable the “exchange” of ions in the cell. This process is core to the cell production and is surrounded by complex and exciting challenges: - The process is a black box and we are trying to shine some light into it. - You will be dealing with new equipment. This means a lot of issues that needs to be solved through corrections and redesign in collaboration with the design team and the supplier. - Process marks and Contamination are a no go, perfect chance to fine tune the process flow and reinvent the wheel with our cleaning systems. - Constantly developing the recipes, Electrolyte filling is the longest process within the Assembly discipline, big time if you like to reduce time waste to the limit.
