🇮🇹 Last week, I traveled to Perugia, Italy for the International Journalism Festival to moderate a panel on "The rise of AI: journalism after platforms" featuring Emily Bell, Charis Papaevangelou, and Anya Schiffrin. ⚡ 11 sessions were focused exclusively on AI, with two discussing regulating AI for the news media. Some big questions considered: 🔹 Should AI be regulated and who should be regulating it? 🔹 What regulatory frameworks exist globally (e.g. AI Act, Digital Services Act, European Media Freedom Act, News Media Bargaining Code, etc.) and what are the differences in how they approach AI and news, if addressed at all? 🔹 How do we assign value to news in an "era" where the quality of information is becoming more scarce and how does that translate to regulation? 📝 I wrote up these #IJF24 conversations on regulating AI for Tech Policy Press. A bit about our panel's approach: "Our session examined the relationship between publishers and technology platforms, specifically focusing on the shift away from social media’s global dominance in journalism and towards AI developers’ growing role in news media. This dichotomy is useful for considering what marks these eras as distinct, and setting up further interrogation on the ways some of tech’s largest players have adapted and used their outsized market power to take the lead in the AI race."
